AIBU?

Taking bites out of a block of cheese...?

My brother is staying with us at the moment and because he can't have dairy, I got some goats cheese in specifically and exclusively for his consumption.

So he comes into the lounge, cheese in paw, plonks himself down on the sofa and starts taking big old bites out of the (350g) block of cheese.

Firstly, AIBU to consider this utterly barbaric? And if I'm not, what is actually wrong with it? I couldn't think of a single good reason not to take big fat mouthfuls of cheese. His argument is that it saves on the washing up, and therefore makes him an exemplary house guest. There has to be a reason why it's wrong though? Surely...?

i suppose if it was a 'proper' guest i'd be mortified - but your brother - not so much so if its only him eating the cheese

Totally not answering your question, but is goats cheese not dairy then?

YANBU, I don't think. Did he know it was exclusively for him? And even so, I would hate to eat something that had been sitting around with traces of my saliva on it! Unless he's planning on eating the whole cheese in one sitting...

I live by myself, so no need to share, but if I ever have cheese as a snack I would cut a few slices and eat them off a plate! :)

Cheese is horrible. It really is. So yes, he is BU, but only because he is actually eating cheese!

I eat cucumbers like that. Cut the end off then just eat it. As it is. All of it. At once.

YABU. It's all for him and he's a man.

That is really disgusting. Do you have any DC who witnessed this sight? What if they were moved to try it with the cheese for family use.?

Surely adults are supposed to be able to demonstrate decent eating habits and table manners?

I would just like a chance to defend myself. I am the fantastic brother in question and think that I am entirely justified in my methods of cheese consumption. I merely feel that it is entirely justified to eat cheese with one's hands when said cheese is for one's consumption. I did not eat the entire block of cheese but merely what was left. I would never dream of acting in such a crass fashion, with cheese not purchased for the expressed reason of my consumption or cheese that I did not plan on eating in one sitting. Surely we should not pander to the demands of social construction and should instead strive to destroy the social norms that regulate cheese consumption.

P.S. Thank you 'Grovel' you make a fine point

SecretNutellaFix - yes, my DD is five months old. Apparently they're really impressionable at that age. I'm quite concerned for her future actually...

It's your brother. Whether or not he's a barbarian should have been settled years ago.

Could I suggest Wine to go with the cheese?

Cheesefiend, I'm sure you will be buying your lovely sister some chocolates for having you to stay. And that she will eat them with a knife and fork in the kitchen.

When DH was a bachelor, there were always hunks of cheese in his fridge with bites taken out of them. Because, you know, when you come home from work late and just want a little nibble, it really is too much trouble to get a knife etc.

Cheesefiend, here's a tip: gobble the cheese in the kitchen, where your sister can't see you.

I'm so confused as to why someone who can't have dairy eats goats cheese.

Confused

Cutting off slices is way better that biting chucks out, that's just a bit piggy wiggyish, so YANBU.

Though cutting a large slice and chopping bites out of that is OK.
