AIBU?

to not find the Charlie Sheen frenzy at all funny

I feel sorry for him. He seems to be incredibly ill.

But people seem to think it is a laugh a minute. Listening to Jo Whiley yesterady and she was talking about how funny his latest broadcast was. I watched a bit of his interview last week, and he looked off his rocker, all twitchy and manic.

I am NO fan of him whatsoever, but I think it is reprehensible that someone completely breaking down like this is viewed as entertainment.

Yeah I hate the fact it's shown as entertainment too. Just like when Brittany Spears went into meltdown.

Having said that, they live their lives in front of a camera so you can't blame people for their interest in it all.

YANBU I totally agree.

totally agree, it is bizarre and shows how unthinking so many people are. He's also almost certainly a wife beater. It's horrifying that until this week his kids were (at least for some of the time) in his care

I agree GetOrf.

It's very sad. DP (while doing stuff on the net tonight) came across a Charlie Sheen quote generator that someone has created on the back of the recent stuff.

I think its very sad and quite disturbing to watch someone having such a public breakdown. :(

It isnt entertaining in the slightest.

Its almost like the american version of Paul Gascoigne. No doubt there will be people behind the scenes encouraging this behaviour to line their own pockets in some way.

Martin Sheen had a terrible battle with alcoholism didn't he.

Charlie Sheen just looks so ill. I don't know how people can sign up to Twitter to read the ramblings of someone who has quite patently lost it.

Apparently he has tested clean from all drugs, however he has the appearance of someone who is totally off their nut on cocaine.

I agree that he is surrounded by types who are going to profit from it.

He is such an unsavoury character though, probably why people have zero sympathy.

No its not funny at all, his on screen persona is meant to get huge guffaws but that persona is pretty much what he is like in real life..only on a much seedier level which is very sad and he clearly doesn't think there is anything wrong with that which is even sadder.......and the hanger onners women who entertain him are as much to blame

I have a feeling this is going to end badly Sad

I can't see it having a happy ending either tbh.

Nope, it won;t have a happy ending given the speed at which it's all occurring and the media frenzy surrounding it

Yes, it is sad, but then if he refuses help, not much can be done.
Agree re:unsavoury character, he has a pretty appalling record of domestic violence- I'm afraid that puts me off feeling too much sympathy, tbh.
But very sad for his family and obv. his kids.

There doesn't seem to be anyone looking out for him, just surrounded by porn stars and hangers on.

He has probably alienated them all.

Jesus wept, for all the money he was who would choose that for a life?

Apparently loads of young blokes think he is some kind of modern hero Hmm

Totally agree.

I also find the hangers on repulsive and am wondering why the hell he hasn't been sectioned yet.

Its so sad to see though, his Dad and brother were on The One Show last week and they seemed to have a really good relationship, Charlie has clearly chosen another path, I don't remember either of them or the interviewers mentioning Charlie....maybe they are embarrassed by him or not in contact? Who really knows?!

I call it the Ollie Reed syndrome - that people laugh at people who are living life to excess, regardless of how ill or strange it makes them. It is disgraceful to watch a slow suicide like Sheen's and take pleasure from it..he looks so awful that I cannot look at him....

Yanbu. Am beyond shocked that his breakdown is seen as news, let alone entertainment.

I don't sympathise with him, but I can't see how any of this public fall from grace is going to help him in any way.

You're so right Punk.

Society wouldn't wheel out others with these kind of mental health issues for fun/entertainment/news

I haven't seen him looking physically ill, in his webcast last night I thought he looked fine - possibly bipolar, not on drugs though.

I love him. Hope he sorts himself out, all the same.

Ollie Reed was x's god father. It was awful watching him walk into a pub already pissed and see people clamber top buy him yet more drinks just to watch him become more and more outragous.

The Charlie Sheen thing makes me sick. The man assaults his wife and yet it is seen as an entertainment peice. he is having a very public breakdown and yet there are people following him on twitter and re tweeting his insane ramblings.

it is disgusting. It is the modern day freak show.

I've said on here a few times in the crush threads, that I've had a crush on him since the 80's and I think the world is a disgusting place and humankind is inherently evil and selfish.

It's like watching a train wreck in slow mo, while the wolves gather around him and encourage him to continue his career suicide so they can feed off the remains for years to come, all while the people of the world stand back pointing and laughing at him and he doesn't seem to be aware of the fact, they are not with him, they are not his fans, they just find the whole thing funny as hell and want him to die in a stupid way that will amuse them and then they will move on to someone else.

I pray he sorts himself out before it's too late, or his dad or someone bundles him off somewhere, I don't like seeing him now he looks really ill and thin.

YANBU - I find it very sad. Sad for his family and his children. He is obviously disturbed and I wonder how some people can find this entertaining.
I also think it will end badly but I hope I'm wrong.

YANBU at all.

It's so sad when someone has such a public breakdown and if (hopefully when) he recovers, to know that the public were just laughing at you when you were going through such a horrendous time.

I saw his dad Martin Sheen and his half brother Emilio Estevez (sp?) on the One Show a couple of weeks ago. They seemed to have a really good relationship nowadays but it wasn't always like that. I remember in the 80s or 90s it was always Charlie and his dad who were seen together and had the 'good' relationship and Emilio was left out in the cold and was the 'wilder' one. The realationships seems to have switched. I don't think Martin Sheen's the good guy people make him out to be and I haven't seen much public support for Charlie from him. Likewise when Emilio went through similar problems years ago, Martin Sheen pretty much disowned him if I recall correctly.

I'm surprised that people think he is mentally ill

He is high on drugs and alcohol, his life is a non-stop party and entirely his choosing

He is not mentally ill, he doesn't need sectioning, he needs rehab, he's an addict
