sorry guys, i know its not an aibu! need an answer quickly though

my ds (nearly 5 months) is being weaned and eats three small meals a day as well as being BF. he has a cold so it snotty anyway.

today he had most of a banana for breakfast and tried a few spoonfuls of fromage frais for lunch (he has bananas most days and has had both milk and cheese before with no probs). no allergies in the family at all btw

about an hour after he ate, he became very miserable and his eyes appear to be swollen? his eyelids are very pink too. he always rubs his eyes but theyre never this bad :(
he is asleep now and snoring, but he always snores

am i being pfb or does it sound like he has had an allergic reaction? what should i do either way?

Go to GP now if you suspect allergic reaction (sounds it if eyelids swelling). Better to be safe than sorry. You could also try ringing NHS direct.

Ring GP on your way and tell receptionist you're coming so that they know to expect you - your GP will know if it is an allergic reaction and how serious it is and will be able to act quickly. Let us know how you get on.

Gosh, yes. Safe side and all.

Watch his breathing, but it looks like fromage frais may have something that does not agree with him - could be preservatives, colouring, fruit traces... What brand was it?

None of my business, but perhaps it's a bit early for weaning, if he's not even 5 months yet? Maybe his digestive tract is not ready to process food other than milk?

Agree with the others, if you are concerned about allergy get straight to the GP. Its possible its conjunctivitis though if he is rubbing at his eyes. Hope you get it sorted quickly

Sounds quite likely. My ds has dairy allergy and his face goes blotchy & swells.

Might be something else, but don't rule out a dairy allergy because he's had dairy products before: the fromage frais could have been the tipping point after being sensitised.

Helloo, we're back, hes been given antihistamine to take. :)

The doctor said it was unlikely it was a dairy reaction as that rarely causes swelling, more often upset stomach. He thinks its more likely it could be something in the yoghurt, such as the preservatives or flavouring. Though he said it could just be caused flu rather than a cold, apparently babies have a tendency to get swollen eyes as part of flu?

What were you doing the rest of the day ?

If he rubs his eyes a lot, he could quite easily have rubbed something a bit irritating into them.
Then he keeps rubbing ....

dairy products arent recommended before 6 months so I would maybe avoid them until your lo is a bit older

Bit of a late post to this one but dairy NOT causing swelling is a complete load of rubbish, can't believe a dr would say that.

When my ds first had dairy at 6 months he swelled up completely, to the point that he couldn't open his eyes, we now have epipens for his allergies.

He also swells to different degrees to other things, they tend to be things that irritate him (like tomatoes, fine to eat but hurt his skin if he rubs it on his face) rather than true allergic reactions iykwim

Maybe post on the allergy board as they really know their stuff there (not that I'm saying that people here don't!)
