YABU... It's only like film-stars getting paid x million per movie or authors getting massive book advances. Like movie stars, a big name football player means bums on seats, sales of merchandise and more shiny silverware/oscars in the trophy cabinet.... they're just capital investment. Why the disgust?

He'd bloody well better be worth it! >

YABU to be disgusted at footballers' salaries. Players' salaries don't come from the public purse but from the likes of me, who pay to attend matches and do so willingly, so what's it to you?

I'm not sure I am disgusted, jealous maybe.
I am very shocked at the price of cars. DH and I were watching topgear on Sunday, some of the cars they featured are worth more than our house.

If buying Torres ensures that Chelsea qualify for the Champions League next year (which has been looking far from certain recently) they will get most if not all of that back, not just from prize money but from TV revenue, merchandise & ticket sales.

£50 million to go dogging with Rooney in your spare time? It's a tough call....

I am worth far more then 50 million pounds, but so far no one has come along to give me the cash! Hmm wonder if I need to kick a ball or something?

Chelsea's money doesn't come from fans though does it, they are making a loss. These huge sums are funded by Roman Abramovich the owner and his private wealth. Imagine the same applies to a number of the other big teams. Most of them are making a loss.

TurkeyBurgerThing Rooney plays (badly) for man united. Torres is going to to chelsea. It is a bit of a long drive for them to met up after training for a dogging session.

Of couse £50 million is an obsence amount of money but if he helps them win the champions league he will be worth every penny.
I only wish West Ham had that sort of backing that they could afford that leval of player but then when you support west ham you get used to the relegation fight every year

Supply and demand. The fans and the clubs want the players and they are willing and able to pay the cash that the players demand. As long as the tax payer isn't paying for them, I don't mind!

Also, their careers are over very early so they have to earn a lifetime's money in just a few years.

It's a good way of getting the super wealthy owners to pump some extra cash into little old England, they'll be some extra tax swilling around the system for a while. A few kiss and tell merchants will make a few quid and just think of the car showrooms and tradesmen that will get hundreds of thousands filtered in to their businesses.

It's a bubble, like any other bubble it will prove to be unsustainable and ultimately burst.

Yay!! Come on Chelsea!!

(nothing useful to say, looking forward to seeing what Torres can do at our beloved Chelsea)

Torres hasn't always played as well as he could have done for Liverpool, whether that was due to lack of support upfront, I couldn't say. I just hope Carroll and Suarez can do some good in his place. Suarez has scored well for Ajax.

The £50 millon doesn't go to Torres. That is manchester united get for selling him abit like a curry's selling tv's. You can buy a cheap one that one on has heard of of you can buy a top name brand.

I haven't read what Torres personal package is yet but you can bet he will be on a similar wage to the likes of Rooney and Drogba

Liverpool have paid £35 millon for andy carroll. They are taking a risk there as he is no Torres and a bit of a one trick pony.

Saltatrix · 01/02/2011 08:41

Torres hasn't been playing well anyway I think this may be to Liverpools advantage. Also the 50mil goes to liverpool not torres unless he has a % of sale clause which means a small amount might go to him.

Chelsea have paid about £20 million too much for him. YABU to complain about the amount of money in football.

Report
MaryBS · 01/02/2011 09:13

Torres had a release deal in his contract which allowed him to go if Liverpool could get £50M for him.

Players are only worth what clubs are prepared to pay.

ThePosieParker · 01/02/2011 09:14

Quite obscene when you think about the economic outlook for many people in the UK.

Report
wannaBe · 01/02/2011 09:15

the £50m doesn't go to the player it goes to the club.

It's rumoured that he will be on £170k a week. That's a lot of tax into the economy (and yes, footballers do pay proper tax as there was an incident recently where a load of payslips were leaked to the media and the amount of tax they paid became public knowledge).

I don't see what business it is of anyone's how much someone else gets paid as long as it doesn't come out of public money.

Report
byrel · 01/02/2011 09:19

YABU he's worth what another club will pay for him. Why are you disgusted at the money the players get paid, he is one of the best in the world and so he's going to be paid well.

I did once read that it is not a problem to be paying mega bucks for the super stars. It is when you are paying that for the chorus line that you have a problem. That is the big issue in football, the clubs with major wage bills for players who are no better than donkeys.

Torres will be worth his money to the club so long as he can stay fit.

Report
BaggedandTagged · 01/02/2011 09:37

I still don't really understand why the club get the money- I mean, they don't "own the player do they? Is it basically a contract termination payment?
