AIBU?

To think that my post should be delivered to me?

I divorced an abusive man last year. He moved out about 15 months ago but will not give me a new address and uses this address against my wishes.

He has a redirections service set up with the post office.

They redeliver my mail to him.

They stick a sticker over my name enabling him to say he opened it by mistake. Initially he returned the post opened to me (which was bad).

Now he is not returning any (which is worse) I'm currently missing a solicitor letter and a medical summary (about me!) and various other utilities and financial matters. Not only do I not receive vital stuff but I don't know what I'm missing and he gets to read my personal health/financial and legal matters...many pertaining to an ongoing case with him.

Originally I complained about the redirection and was assured they would never post anything to him
A week later 2 letters went

I complained in writing and online and was assured this was a one off and would not happen again.
A month later it did.

I complained (in writing, phone and online) and insisted it went to the postal review panel who took awhile to respond (meanwhile who knows what letters he is getting)

They promised it wouldn't happen.

I only now know it is still going on because the sol told me exactly what day they posted the letter regarding him Angry to me and then I realised I was missing several things

I have changed my address with the bank so my post is now delivered to a friend 180 miles away. I have now changed my name so that there is no confusion on that front. (This is very upsetting because I've had this name for 22 years and it is same as my children.) I live in this address and have done for 5 years and they post my post to him and I can't use it as my own postal address.
Am I being unreasonable to think the people concerned are useless incompetent prats?

That's awful! I'm pretty sure it's illegal to open someone else's post, is there no way of reporting him? Surely the post office can't redirect your mail to him? That is appalling, especially where sensitive information is concerned. I don't understand about the stickers though, who sticks the stickers on? I suggest you get some advice from your solicitor if they are helpful or citizens advice. Hope you get this sorted out!

How awful you must have grounds for complaint. Not sure who to though. Is there a regulator for the post office? Try your mp. This is more than mere incompetence as it's allowing an abusive man with whom you previously had a relationship with, unauthorised and inappropriate access to your private correspondence.
However could you set up a post office box address or a c/o address with your solicitor ? What if you set up your own postal redirection to a friends address. Not ideal, might not work and probably will cost you money.

lala - yes it's illegal but a) you have to prove it which means seeing him do it - he just denies being in receipt of my post now and b) when he did admit it they had covered up my name so he couldn't help it

The post office sticks the stickers on!

I have contacted the post office regulator/my MP/changed my address on some stuff and changed my name.

The papers he received were from a sol who used 'old' address details (the court do the same despite having been asked to redirect to a nominated c/o address)

I thought you had to have ID in order to redirect mail - how could he have done this when he is obviously not a woman?

I am guessing he's redirected his own mail but they are just redirecting anything with the same surname ??

They redirect via a surname, it can be done online with no ID.

We had a direction set up from our old house, for a week we not only got our mail but the mail of the new tennants!!! I complained and got told these things happen!

I really don't know what you can do :(

Ask for recorded delivery only from any solicitor's correspondence. If that fails to be sent on to you, report the theft of mail to the police.

Keep reporting theft of mail and keep reporting to Royal Mail until they do something about it.
