To be ever so slightly smug

About the lady who called me a wuss for driving dd to school this morning, because she ended up flat on her back on the ice? Only slightly smug because I think it hurt. But she did sort of bring it on herself, so I feel somewhat justified in my smugness.

Background: we live a five-minute walk from the school, and it would be absurd to drive under normal circumstances. But this morning the circumstances were not normal. When dd and I stepped out onto the pavement, the ice was the worst its been - wet on top because of the rain, frozen solid underneath, totally terrifying ice-rink! I knew that there was no way we'd make it to school without going over, and I just wasn't prepared to take the risk. So I bundled dd into the car instead, and offered a lift to one of the other mums who was passing by with her son. She declined and called me a wuss for being unwilling to brave the ice. I dropped dd at school and then drove back, passing her on the way and seeing her go over.

I did stop to ensure that she was OK (she was!) but couldn't help but feel a tiny bit pleased with myself for having made the wiser decision! Grin

Ooo it's like my smugness that the bloke who told me NOT to grit on Wednesday cannot get his car out and is revving like a goodun outside.

Was the road not also icy?

Right to be smug! We live near our school but we've driven a couple of times recently...as have a lot of other people, the amount of cars has definately increased. I fell last year on the way to school, and I was 8 months pregnant and carrying my (then) 18 month old and holding my 4 yr olds hand to try and keep her upright. It was awful, and suprise suprise I went into labour the next day.
You are not a wuss...You are just being sensible and doing the best for your kids.
Enjoy the smugness I say!! Xmas Grin

I can't help but think that what was 'best' for your kids was more dangerous for all the other kids put at risk from being hit by a couple of tons of skidding metal- surely if the pavement was that bad, the road was also similarly treacherous?

Feel smug all you like, but she wasn't the one being rather selfish, in my opinion.

Around here the roads are clear but the pavements are like skating rinks, so it is probably safer to drive than risk broken bones trying to walk.

Marlinspike - its like that here, all the roads are fine but the pavements are dangerous. We have driven all week, tried to walk Monday but DD was her backside four times before we got off our road.

Fair play to her for trying but not sure why she needed to pass judgement on your choice.

Roads around here are absolutely fine - I am even more of a wuss about driving on ice than I am about walking on it! Grin So I definitely don't think I was putting anyone at risk by driving.

Our normal route to school is via a footpath which has been treacherous during the last few days. When I saw what the pavements were like, I didn't think it was worth even looking at the footpath. Glad I didn't, as a lot of dd's friends apparently fell on the way to school and even if they didn't hurt themselves, they arrived a bit wet!

Yes, I walked today but it would have been far safer to drive..the pavements are treacherous, the roads normal.
