The economy is fucked and the government offer cheddar hand-outs.

Yeh, the people of Ireland must be cracked in the head not to go for that one!

kind of not at all funny if you happen to live here and are trying to support a family with the same outgoings as 3 years ago, but less than 2/3 of the income. About to be half of former income.

Real people, real lives are in trouble: and cheese ain't gonna fix it

It was always available to those who are destitute and receiving help, but if you can't pay the mortgage, the bills [electrical company disconnecting up to 400 people a week] a block of cheese will not be of much use in the over all nightmare.

apologies for complete sense of humour failure: have done all the cheese jokes I can muster, and am genuinely losing sleep at night over how I can support my family (and I am one of the luckier ones)

No, I'm sorry driving - was just being thoughtlessly silly

Brendan Smith should be ashamed, it was handled really badly. They should be helping people negotiate with the state run companies to keep the power and heating in peoples homes.

Sorry too, driving- just ridiculing the laughable policy.

It actually beggars belief.

Sympathies, driving. DH's extended family are really feeling the effects of the economic downturn in Eire, and it's hard to see the humour in such stupid policies.
