Why on earth do schools make girls wear ties?

What's the difference between girls and boys wearing ties? Equally ridiculous for both IMO.

YABU for thinking it is different for a girl to wear a tie to a boy.

At dd's school they have recently introduced clip on ties for boys and girls, it means they have to have the top button done up and all tie knots are the same. The children look much better and they all look smart and tidy.
They have also banned boys trousers hanging down and showing pants, thank goodness.

I guess the idea of school ties is preparation for smart adult dressing for work. But adult women don't wear ties....so why should girls. It's so not a good look, especially once puberty kicks in.

School uniform is also about all pupils being 'uniform' as in looking the same and being ambassadors for their school when out and about.

If girls didn't have ties then it would not be uniform and they would have more opportunity to mess with the uniform more, which is not a good thing.

I never minded wearing a tie at school, I really don't see the big issue.

do girls and boys both wear trousers at this school?

YABU - ties for both or ties for none, girls don't deserve special treatment. Personally I like ties and would always rather they be proper ties with a proper Windsor or half-Windsor knot.

YANBU! When I was a student at Uni I worked in a theatre bar...and we ALL had to wear bow ties, white shirt and black trousers and waistcoat....girls would have looked so much btter in an open necked shirt...or a blouse with a small collar.

Ties are a mans accessory...girls would look better in a plain shirt...why do we expect girls to don a mans item of clothing whie at school?

why not?..Hmm

YANBU. I agree with those who've said that ties are a mans accessory. It's not usual to see an adult woman wearing a tie is it? Besides, they look hideous on men imho and even worse on women.

YANBU- I can't bear ties on girls. Grown up women don't wear ties (or they certainly shouldn't!!) at my dcs school, the boys wear ties but the girls wear a revere collared blouse- much nicer IMO.

I liked my school tie too...you could upset the teachers by wearing it as a head-band Grin or as fat as possible..

I wore a tie through the whole of secondary and never thought anything about it - it was part of the uniform. It was an all girls school btw

YABU

I am very fond of school ties but I realise this is irrational.

I just don't think that the uniform of education (and the proffessional aspiration it is meant to represent) should require girls to dress up like boys.

At girls schools they don't seem to wear ties so much - they get those school uniform blouses that don't button all the way up to the neck - they are smart and professional, nothing to mess around with etc... look like young proffessional women, just like boys in school uniform look like young proffessional men.

They do let them wear skirts at my kids school, so they are not totally uniform anyway.

Yes revere collars I think that's what I mean! And I should learn to spell that other word before using three times in one post. Oops Blush

Ds1's school has ties for girls and boys, it looks nice. The local secondary became an academy last Sept and the boys all wear ties, girls have too if they have button up blouses, if they have the open neck blouses they do not.
