OK DS1 is not the easiest pupil at times but the Monday he asked his french teacher if he could take his blazer off as he was hot. She told him not unless he asked in french, and apparently other pupils told him as well - I didn't think they had a right to tell another pupil what to do. Anyway - DS1 told her he felt dizzy and was too hot but she told him no he couldn't, rightly or wrongly he did anyway.

Yesterday I spoke to the head of house and expressed my concern that he had already informed the teacher he was feeling unwell and yet she wouldn't let him remove his blazer unless he asked in French. She said she agreed with me that it was wrong and she would have a word with her.

Roll on today the said french bitch teacher called me not 6 minutes ago and basically repeated what DS1 had said to me, I explained my feelings which are - and I quote "Some children are so much quicker at learning languages, I am 35 now and have never been brilliant at it"

The bitch teacher then replied "Now be quiet and listen to me, I am older than you"

I replied "Excuse me, I am not a pupil, I am the mother of a pupil"

She didn't like that and ended the call.

I am fucking furious, I have left a message for the head of house to call me ASAP.

Maybe is the teacher had told ds the phrase in french and asked him to repeat it it would have been more sensible. Even make him write it down so he doesn't forget it for next time.
Agree her phone manner is not the best ..Good luck !

How old is DS? That's quite a complex request unless reasonably advanced in French.

I am so f'king angry, I wouldn't mind but the whole of the school know I am fully behind them when it comes to dealing with DS1, because he can be awkward. But I will NOT be spoken to that way because "I am older than you"

what she said to you on the phone was Shock but some schools are very strict on blazer wearing and they are not removed even in the summer unless the head authorises it

not that i agree with that level of strictness

did he even have a stab at asking in french?

MardyBra · 20/10/2010 12:27

So year 7ish. Definitely unreasonable to expect 12 yo to make that request in French.

YANBU at the rudeness but I assume that if she asked him to ask in French she had already taught the class how to do this.

Gosh I did French to GCSE standard and I'm not sure I could've asked to remove a blazer.

I could probably have asked to "go without this" or to open this but I think I would have struggled to get the word out before keeling over.

I too would like to know if teacher is French Wink

No she is english - or maybe just doesn't have a very strong french accent.

She did say he froze up when he was asked to ask in french, which I know he does when he is put on the spot...a bit like me tbh.

My anger is at the way she spoke to me, I have tried helping DS1 with french but even with CD's which he listens to he just can't "get it"

Some teachers spend so long talking to children, that they forget how to communicate with adults. Well done for not laughing when she said that. I bet she feels like a total fool now.

Obviously, you have to make the Head aware that this is not acceptable behaviour. Woman sounds unhinged to me.

I can see the funny side of it now, but she was just so rude.

If I had been rude to her, I could understand it. All I said was I too had struggled with languages and a lot of children to.

Not the main concern, I know, but I did smile at your indignation at the other students telling your DS that he had to take his blazer off - "I didn't think they had a right to tell another pupil what to do."

My students tell each other what to do all the time and they love pointing out the rules to each other and when someone is breaking them just as much as they love complaining about said rules to each other and me!

On the other hand, the teacher's manner on the phone is just beyond belief!

She was rude. I assume she must have taught them it. French teaching is all about immersion where they only hear the taught language but it us a little harsh.
I am a secondary teacher and am shocked that one would speak to a parent like that!
