to be annoyed about the landlords gas safety check???

Got a phone call while on holiday a few weeks ago from the letting agent saying the gas safety check was due - could the bloke come and do it that week,

No - I wasn't there.

So - arranged for him to come this last Wednesday (I got back at 7pm on the Tuesday night). Stayed in all day with an empty fridge and boys driving me up the wall only to get a phone call at 6pm saying "sorry won't be until Friday afternoon"

Friday afternoon rolled by yesterday - still hadn't turned up.

He's just turned up now. Obviously I've let him in to do it - but am quite p*ssed off that it wasn't done when they said it would be done.

I'm properly child free for the first time in weeks (boys went off to their dads about 45 minutes ago), and was just settling down chilling and now my peace has been shattered

Get a grip it's only an inconvenience, who knows the tester man might have had a family berevement or a Dr's appoint.

Gas safety checks save lives would you rather he didn't come round at all?

MrsGangly Sat 28-Aug-10 13:46:59

faerie, what nonsense! If he couldn't come, he should have informed her! Not to do so, regardless of the reason, it is just rude.

Oh right, cause if he had a solid reason like a berevement he would have had time to phone.

Let's look at the bigger picture, he missed an appointment. It's an annoyance and petty but it's hardly the end of the world.

There's a lot worse than missed appointments

MaMoTTaT Sat 28-Aug-10 14:25:58

I would rather he stuck to his appointment days.

He was off to a wedding today (he informed me as he left)

It was a bloody huge inconvinience to me - I came home on Tuesday night to an empty fridge, I have 3 children - I kept them in the entire day on Wednesday to wait for someone that didn't show up. It cost me a bloody fortune at the corner shop to buy food for their dinner once I realised he wasn't showing,

I had rung the letting agent in the morning to check what time he was showing up, she said she didn't know as the landlord had arranged it and I should ring him and ask him (she also said she'd try and get hold to ask him as well).

It was 6pm when the landlord got back to her to say that actually he'd arranged for it to be done on Friday afternoon.

I waited in again on Friday afternoon, and he didn't show - again 3 impatient children who wanted to go out (as I did - I still have school uniforms to buy! - and I don't have them this weekend so can't do it now).

There was no phone call to say he wouldn't be coming (he's a friend of the LL's - so surely someone could have contacted me?).

He turned up this morning unannounced.

Now - if we look at your statement "would you rather the check wasn't done".........well - what if I'd gone out (I nearly did) - and he'd showed up and there was no-one to let him in to do the check? How would that be any safer???

OH - and his comment this morning when I answered the door and he said who he was and I said "oh I was expecting you yesterday" -

"were you? oh right, I'm here now"

And yes I know there's a lot worse than missed appointments - trust me you don't need to tell me that

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 14:35:10

Im waiting in for one now.

Our HA has changed the company who do the gas safety checks again. Received a letter telling us what day they were coming and the fact that it was an afternoon call.
Phoned and changed it to a more convenient day. Has anyone here ever used them or live in an HA property where your HA uses them.

They are fucking useless to get hold of on the phone. On hold for ages so i had to ring the HA and get them to contact them for me Then i missed a call while i was making a coffee so i tried to ring them back on it Its not accepting incoming calls.
What a lot of fucking pratting about .

HA have given them the contract in a hurry. And it shows.

manticlimactic Mon 23-Sep-13 14:44:06

Oh gawd. Our HA has just changed to Liberty Gas hmm

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 14:48:14

manti getting through to them on the phone is a nightmare The call i missed from them was on a number that doesnt take incoming calls. Bloody useless.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 15:17:52

Got a call from them and they said they arent coming They have only just found out that the engineer wasnt in today. And if i hadnt kept checking up on them and ringing around i would still be sitting here like an idiot.

Best bit is that Sanctuary Housing have told me that the reason they got rid of Carillion is because they were not turning up to appointments HAH LIKE LIBERTY GAS you mean.

Carillion were turning up They turned up for our appointments every time. What a load of bollocks Something very fishy going on here.

manticlimactic Mon 23-Sep-13 15:19:05

Well I've just double checked the HA website and now it's Suregroup but the letter on my fridge says Liberty. Either they've taken the contract from them or they have the wrong name on the website. (Used to be IDM)

Beastofburden Mon 23-Sep-13 15:38:10

why didnt the agent give him a key and tell him to let himself in and lock up when he finished?

Why do you even need to be there?

CandidaDoyle Mon 23-Sep-13 15:41:15

This thread is over 3 years old, have you been waiting in for the gas fitter to come for all that time?

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 15:44:32

I was looking for other people whove had similar experiences and found this thread,

beast just because you dont mind strangers in your own home when you are not there doesnt mean others feel the same.
If something went missing from your home during this visit would your insurance cover it. If so please give me the name of your insurance company cos they must be pretty special.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 15:45:25

manti which HA are you PM me if you dont want it on the thread.

Beastofburden Mon 23-Sep-13 15:49:07

Dark I just think it is the most pragmatic way for these things to be done. I allow certain people into my house when I am out, not because I am naive but because those people are traceable. The gas company will know exactly who has been in your house and their staff will know the score about being accused of theft.

It was actually meant as a serious suggestion to resolve this with your landlord and save you the bother in future, and its what a lot of people actually do.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 16:02:32

I want to know why they are saying that the contract with Carillion ended because they wernt turning up when thats bollocks.
Its Liberty who havent turned up today. And their phone no doesnt take incoming calls.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 16:04:24

I dont want people who have already shown themselves to be incompetent in my flat when i am not here.
And i cant give the key to an agent even if they wanted to The HA are in another county.

Beastofburden Mon 23-Sep-13 16:09:03

If they are really incompetent then there is a bigger problem. Do you trust them to do the gas safety certificate OK? I'm not trying to be funny- you are trusting them with your safety. We had someone at work die from carbon monoxide poisoning- turned out she and her DH had been given a gas safety certificate which failed the appliance but they didnt understand that this meant they had to not use it, they thought it just meant, get it fixed as soon as you can. It was horrible.

Fleta Mon 23-Sep-13 16:15:38

God I'd have been delighted if they'd done it whilst I wasn't there! There's nothing more tedious than waiting for maintenance people!

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 16:15:53

beast thats awful. sad It was the way i was spoken to on the phone by the caller from Liberty No wonder they make it so they dont receieve incoming calls.
The left hand doesnt know what the right hand is doing so i have ZERO CONFIDENCE.

Beastofburden Mon 23-Sep-13 16:23:17

It's very annoying when people treat you as if your time has no value. I've been lucky in the people who have needed to come into my home to check stuff- I've always kown pretty much who was in charge of them. I suspect this is another cost-cutting outsourcing thing sad.

Beastofburden Mon 23-Sep-13 16:29:12

her memorial website is here and it has lots of details on it about buying a monitor and so forth.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 16:42:57

Beast thats exactly it They will pick the cheapest that is available. And its the tenants they want to put up with the result. Coz we iz just social housing scum innit.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 16:45:24

The lady on the Gas Compliance desk at Sanctuary is trying really hard to get this resolved and has passed it on to the evening/night engineer.
Shes the only one who has been helpful

Beastofburden Mon 23-Sep-13 17:07:03

dark DO get a CO2 monitor. There are free ones offered from time to time as part of awareness campaigns. Dont trust them to look after you properly.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 17:12:33

DH said exactly the same when he came home Will get one tommorrow Still waiting on Liberty Apparently the engineer has GOT to be from this "company"
Will ask for a complaint form though Shouldnt have had to go through all this. Its fucking ridiculous.

Having a gas safety check is a legal requirement.

Next time landlord/agent is faffing you about tell him when YOU will be in, and tough luck if he does not turn up at that time.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 17:33:48

Still waiting

specialsubject Mon 23-Sep-13 17:40:26

unfortunately being pissed about by people who don't turn up is a privilege that we all share.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 17:56:06

Why is service so bloody dire.

I think its disgusting that the gas safety engineer did not turn up when he said he would and you were given no notification. It may well be that your landlord had no notification either.

However the gas safety check is law and has to be done. If your landlord did not carry out the safety check you and your children could all die in their beds.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 18:22:43

Agree Which is why its important that he turns up.

And my neighbours need forewarning that when they take a day off of their minimum wage jobs to wait for these fuckers to get their finger out that they may not turn up.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 18:25:26

I foresee some docked rent in Sanctuarys future.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 18:29:20

Will be speaking to Environmental Health tomorrow. Like others have said its important that its done so therefore comes under their remit.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 20:57:57

An engineer from Liberty phoned at 6.50pm from Enfield. (im in Essex) would have taken him over an hour to get here and then hes got to do the check.
The boiler is next the cooker so i would have had to wait ages before i could start cooking tea Already skipped lunch while waiting all day for same reason. Not this enginneers fault He was polite and apologetic.
Said it would mean him driving for over an hour to do a ten minute job. So i thanked him and told him to leave it for now I sent Sanctuary a text and i or they (sanctuary will ring me tomorrow or i will ring them I no longer wish to correspond with Liberty Gas in any way shape or form.
DH is worried though because the other enginneer from Carillion used to be here for 45 mins doing a check. Not ten minutes.
I also missed my excsersise routine today. IM NOT missing or cancelling anything else.

ReallyTired Mon 23-Sep-13 21:10:58

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 21:14:08

You posted that earlier so i will reiterate what i said earlier. The fact that it has to be done is the VERY reason why they should have turned up today.

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 23:19:47

The posts coming up were NOT written by me, I have been given permission to cross post by another tenant.

yes the problems are with Liberty Gas. Many people where we live have also had problems with them, from a falsified Gas Safety Certificate to a tenant receiving a threatening letter from Sanctuary stating she was in breach of her tenancy agreement because she had missed two appointments for a gas safety inspection. This lady contacted Sanctuary to protest and said someone had been home at all times, Sanctuary insisted the appointments had been missed until the tenant asked why liberty hadn’t left calling cards. The only thing that is consistent with Sanctuary is the failures and subsequent cover ups. And it will only get worse

Darkesteyes Mon 23-Sep-13 23:21:29

could you inform people on mumsnet it is unacceptable conduct on Sanctuary’s behalf. Appointments must be made, and appointments must be kept and if they can’t keep them they should give the tenant reasonable notice. If contractors turn up unexpected turn them away, I do as its inconvenient, and Sanctuary know this too. If they do fail, you are entitled to some compensation but you will have to make a formal complaint. Good luck and don’t give up.

Darkesteyes Sun 29-Sep-13 21:14:50

Another appointment has been made for tomorrow So hopefully someone will turn up the second time.

Darkesteyes Mon 30-Sep-13 16:13:50

Guess what im still waiting and have had a discussion about it with Sanctuary but when tried to ring back just now they just hang up or disconnect.

Darkesteyes Mon 30-Sep-13 16:14:44

We keep having to move husbands disability aids out of the way back and forth back and forth etc.
