AIBU?

to be embarrassed by FIL's dress sense

FIL is a lovely man but I couldn't help cringing inside when he came out with us today. He was wearing shorts pulled up high, Simon Cowell style, with a t-shirt tucked in, thick white sports socks and black shoes (proper lace up shoes too). To complete the look he had his camera bag around his neck.

HA! at least your FIL wears clothes!
I took tea into mine the other day and got a nice juicy shot of his old man balls squashed up!

OMG OTTMummA, think I'd rather have mine than yours.

He did sit at the breakfast table this morning with no top on though - not really a sight I wanted to see over my cornflakes.

I'm all about comfort over fashion but there are some things I draw the line at - white socks and shoes is one but with shorts too, shudder.

my mother insists on wearing socks with sandals. We went out one day and she had on a bright red t-shirt ,fawn trousers that where up her ankles [as all her trousers are] and black open toed sandals with socks.

Is your mum single borderslass? Perhaps we should introduce them?

As a matter of fact yes dad died 4 years ago they'd been together 53 years, however one is bad enough she's getting a bit forgetful now as well so I do worry about her even if she drives me crazy.

That's not so bad. My dad came to the supermarket I worked at (when I was a teenager and easily embarassed) in a white t-shirt that didn't quite cover his sizeable belly, a pair of grey sweatpants that were way too tight (turned out he'd put on mom's sweatpants), a pair of black socks and black dress shoes. He was not at all embarassed, I was mortified.

My FIL dresses like Inspector Gadget when it rains. Long, grey, double breasted belted mac, grey trilby, blue jeans and black shoes. Seriously, you'd think he was a lookalike.

If he has to work in the garden this is often accompanied by a scythe which just makes me a bit scared of Inspector Gadget.

He doesn't know though - we live in Germany - he'd never have heard of Inspector Gadget. It's just a coincidence.

Puts the theme tune in my head for days.

My late (step) FIL had a love affair with cardigans and anoraks. My MIL has lots of pairs of trousers in that stretchy, polyester (some LOVELY check patterns too) which are usually teamed with acrylic jumpers in that "granny style". I have no idea where she buys them and I'm convinced there is a secret "old lady shop" that you don't get to find out about until you are a pensioner.
