I'm furious, the smell is awful and I've had to close all the windows. I thought there was a law about not doing this sort of thing so early in the day. I can't put any washing out and the dc can't go in the garden because of the smell. Is there anyone I can report it to? Sorry for moaning, I am just cross about it!

No laws about it unless it is a regular occurence and a risk to health.

YABU - it's not that early!

I'm guessing this is a one off, rather than a regular occurence?

What are they burning that's smelling so awful.
I presume you mean there's a bad smell rather than justa smokey bonfire smell

If they're just burning garden rubbish maybe they're hoping it'll be finished in time for everyone to use the gardens the rest of the day

Yabu

what time would be acceptable to you ?

Builders start work at 8am , they make a hell of a racket but start early and knock off early

find it odd that your kids can't go in the garden with the smell of a bonfire

The smoke was coming over and it really stank. The sc could have physically gone into the garden but I wouldnt let them as I didn't want them breathing it in or stinking of smoke. I didn't realise it was acceptable to have bonfires in the day abs thought it was only acceptable after dusk and when it's dark as that's what my dad always did. I can't stand bonfires though!

they probably wanted to get it out the way before it starts chucking it down again :)

YANBU! Bonfires are a nuisance and there are council guidelines as to when you should/shouldn't have one. These include when neighbours are likely to be in their garden, when there is washing on the line, on the weekend etc. Our neighbours had a bonfire on the hottest day of the year - ds has asthma so he couldn't go out, I had to shut oll the windows as the smoke was acrid, my washing was dry and I had to wash it again twice before I got rid of the smell. I asked them to put it out and they did (reluctantly!) I'd ask them politely to put it out if it's still going!

council guidelines are a bit vague up your way mowgli.....

With Mowgli's list it sounds as though 8.30am is one of the few times it would be OK for them to have a bonfire. Afternoon or early evening would be more disruptive.

YANBU bonfires should be illegal. They are done by SELFISH,INCONSIDERATE BASTARDS.......
my neighbours do this at least twice a week,
everytime i put my washing out some bastard lights a bonfire.I think people who do this are short of a few brain cells maybe its all that smoke...when one of my neighbours mows his lawn he burns the grass clippings at the same time..lovely NOT...
