The one that has the blue bedroom with all the inspirational football stuff and a man talking about his hopes and dreams for his son, and then he says something like 'oh well', paints it pink and it has flowers + a dollshouse + that's it.
grr

What's wrong with it?

Report

zenon - I just find the 'oh my son, who I was hoping for, I have all these dreams of a glittering career and fame and fortune, but you are a girl, so I can forget all that and just give you pink stuff because obviosuly you will never be a glittering famous success' subtext really depressing.

I hope she grows up hating pink. And football.

I want her to be a rugby loving tomboy. who ends up playing for England.

That'll teach him for calling her Beardsley.

I don't want to watch it. Sounds awful

Report
Adair · 18/07/2010 20:21

Ok, watched it. As depressing as it sounded. Probably no grounds for complaint as comedy sexism... well, we're only havin' a laugh, aren't we?

Exactly adair, we must just have no sense of humour.

It is a shit ad, but just as unfair for a son to be automatically installed in some kind of weird football shrine as for a daughter to be all pinkified from birth.

Very true starkadder, I suppose having 2 dd's makes me notice the girl thing a bit more, but either way it's a ridiculous advert for paint.

and to add insult to injury, the shade of paint looked like a school dinner blancmange circa 1985

Oh for the love of God, you lot really do overthink things sometimes! It's a paint advert, both colours are horrible - but it's really not worth getting your knickers in a knot over!

Report
Adair · 20/07/2010 07:45

No, quite. That;s why it is just wearily depressing rather than stand up and wave placards over.

And agree, it is depressing for both genders.

Ach, it's an advert for paint...can't say I'd be wound up by it...apparent sexism or not

Appalling shade of pink mind you!

Why is it 'depressing' for both genders?

I find all this 'shock, horror' over Pink & Blue all the time, just a tad over the top. Most girls generally do like/prefer pink, most boys generally do like/prefer blue - so what? If they don't, that's fine - no-one is making them have it and no-one is beating them for wanting something different.

Why all the hand-wringing/depression/shock/outrage??? Surely there are more important things to save that for??

Oh just read all the other threads on this. Of course, nowt wrong with pink and blue in themselves. My daughter is running round in a pink fairy dress right now

It was the 'my son WILL be like this. Oh well, my daughter WILL be like this instead' that I -and others- found a bit sigh. It is just a sigh, as I said... not wound up.

Agree not sure who would see that pink and go 'ooh yes, MUST rush out and buy THaT!'

Report
ChippingIn · 20/07/2010 09:34

I have absolutely NO idea who would see that colour & buy it, unless it was for someone you really disliked!!

I can understand a little bit of a 'sigh' that there's the assumption that all boys will like this and all girls will like that .... but all of this hand-wringing/hate hate hate/anger/disbelief/depression just way over the top...
