To give my toddlers Tesco Value pizza for a meal?

ok let me explain. I always thought I was good at feeding my kids (3 & 18m) until I started using bloody MN! Now Im convinced they are always high on salt/sugar/additives/sweetners.

Breakfast- Cocoa pops, satsuma, banana, 2x petit filous

Lunch- Jam wholemeal sandwich, chunks of cheese, slices of pepper (dont even mention the pepper situation ) cherry tomatoes, sliced apple

Dinner- Tesco value kids pizza (bought on last best before date and got for 12p), and was going to top with tuna, sweetcorn, peppers and pineapple.

Does that sound ok for todays food? Im scared of the bloody pizza now!

A bargain! I don't like their pizzas. Sounds nice with your toppings though.

Pizza sounds ok, with the added goodies. I would be a bit concerned about what went in the tomato sauce if they had it very often, but often I've found value things have less added nasties than the more expensive versions!
I would say that coco pops and petit filous and jam sandwiches is rather alot of sugar in one day though.

I AM CALLING SOCIAL SERVICES

you are Karen Matthews

you do realise that someone will come on and pick this apart dont you

petit filous, too much sugar
tesco value, probably made by child labour
pine apple, allergy issues
coco pops, almost, but not quite, child abuse

Wowee, fair play to you, they get a lot of fruit and veg. Peppers! I can only dream of mine even touching their peppers with their cutlery, never mind eating it!

Sounds ok to me - you've got dairy, fruit, veg etc.

maybe serve some more salady bits with the pizza?

Just ignore I am sure you are doing fine the meal sounds great. My BIL almost had a heart attack when I was pg and eat a hotdog his jumping up and down screaming you can't eat that while trying to swipe it out of my hands was brilliant and made it taste so much better . I make sure to eat one everytime he sees me now .

sorry if my petit filous/coco pops/jam bashing offended, was just trying to pick holes i the menu as that was what was asked...
My DD's diet is far from perfect!

Thanks all. Thats what I think Robyn, but its so hard to avoid it. For breakfast they have weetabix with petit filou on top, but again thats sugar and salt (cant find salt free weetabix!) or toast, but with butter or jam. My dentist said fruit is horrendous for rotting teeth, so I even worry about bananas etc.

I give them ham sandwiches too, or egg mayo, and its homemade jam so no additives.

Its so hard to feed well without it costing a fortune, and Im a bit of a lazy cook

Every so often a pizza is great! The ones in Lidl make great bases, a box of 3 for a couple of quid.

We stick a can of tuna on the top, some prawns (garlic/onion) and more cheese. Fresh tomato and oregano if you like, and bake as usual... nothing to beat it!

Sounds like your kids are eating fine. watch the portion sizes though, a quarter of a small 5" pizza is the RDA for small children.

Oh and my skin is like leather, will take more than picking at my menu to offend me

Tried the natural yog mixed with fruit trick, my 3yr old sussed me out straight away, and asked why I was hiding the fruit in the 'yukky slop'.

how about peanut butter? boiled eggs? cream cheese?
those are things my dd has for breakfast.
It is hard when time and money are tight, we have the same prob here, and the reduced section is our friend too!

I dont worry too much about porton sizes, as my kids are mega active. Every week we do soft play, swimming, 2 days at nursery (which is non stop outdoor play as its in the countryside), and 2x 2 mile walks with the dogs. Am I right thinking they can eat more as long as they stay a good weight?

Or am I wrong and am silently clogging up their arteries causing poss diabetes/heart disease

This is so complicated when you start analysing!

But you do know that it is really easy to grow your own organic pizza flour (if you live in a flat, just whip up homemade window box for your harvest )

Actually it sounds fine to me. If you want to reduce the sugar a bit and still give them fromage frais, then the Sainsbury's basics brand actually has less sugar than petit filous (no idea about the Tesco value brand though!) And too right for adding stuff on the value pizza - frozen pizzas are just bases with a hint of topping imo - you need to add stuff on.

We eat a fairly balanced diet in our house, plenty of healthy and plenty of crap erm, easier stuff. Of course it's not perfect, but then I'm not perfect so that fits ok.

Mine won't touch peppers though

Sorry Robyn, crossed posts.
I thought peanut butter was no-no cuz of allergies/salt content?
Boiled eggs we could do, going to try that tomorrow, thanks!

You can get salt free peanut butter (Whole Earth I think?) Allergies, well, I don't know, depends on the child I suppose. Both of mine have had it and no reaction so far, touch wood.

TBH I just get whatever yoghurt is on special offer, whether its little fromage style tubs, or huge onken, or ski etc.
As long as it looks reasonable quality and its on offer, its in the trolley.

peanuts are ok past 1, so long as you dc's aren't allergic to nuts?
my jar says there's 1g salt per 100g, so if dd ate a quarter of a jar that's her daily salt intake, but she doesn't have that much! it's 97% nuts, which are full of protein and healthy fats...

RobynLou · 12/07/2010 15:38

wholeearth peanut butter has salt, but no sugar...
(and is on offer in sainsburys atm!)

Report
monkeyfacegrace · 12/07/2010 15:39

trots off to sainsburys

then thinks to ask, you put peanut butter on toast, yes?!
