Allergies and intolerances

where else, apart from Macdonalds, can we eat out and see allergy lists?

dd4 has egg, milk, and peanut allergies, and has been given an epipen.

i knoew macdonalds were good for listing allergens, and there half a dozen or so items that dd4 can actually have, though she may get fed up of fish fingers when she is older.

where else lists things well? when i have asked before if they could find out if things were cooked in butter or oil, or milk added, when out and about i get a lot of blank looks and 'i dunno'

Pizza hut do a list on their website - dd is allergic to milk and egg and can have the potato wedges and barbecue wings from the adult menu and she's had the spaghetti bolognese from the children's menu (she's almost 17 months). We're not quite as badly off - the worst dd's had is a swollen face from some cheese at 6.5 months old so she's got piriton but that's as far as it goes.

I think it sucks that most of the "child friendly" type places are italians and mexicans and neither have particularly allergy friendly menus.

We've been out to random pubs with food and, the quieter ones at least, have generally been very helpful. We went to a Toby Carvery on Saturday and, although all the veggies had butter on them, they cooked her some peas and carrots separately.

We've tried Franky and Benny's. The service was appallingly slow (took over an hour to get the food) but they did check that the food they were giving her was ok.

DH says KFC has an allergy list on their website too.

(When I read this it sounds like we eat garbage all the time - it's not true really it's just that we've had to start paying attention since we've had dd. She likes sausages best - she'll eat fish fingers but we have to peel the orange bits off for her!)

I found a reference to Garfunkle's having one. But the menus are in pdf form and those slow down my PC too much, so I couldn't check.

Beefeaters and Wagamamas both have allergy listings in the restaurants. And Wetherspoons have one on their website

Zizzi have allergy information here zizzi - and being Italian are hopefully child friendly. They also quite often have offers if you join their mailing list. Currently they do 2 main courses for 10 pounds.

We've eaten in Wetherspoons as very little of their food contains nut.

Yo Sushi have a good list on their website. Not cheap for a casual family meal though.

Most of the chains have the info available on their websites if you can remember to check before you go. Some are more helpful than others in breaking down the dishes into component parts though, so that if necessary one small part of it can be left.

And actually McD's aren't as good as they used to be at listing allergens. Those tray liners that used to have all the info on aren't made anymore apparently.

The list in harvester doesn't (or at least didn't - they might have improved) include all the salad bar stuff though, which is kind of the point of going to a harvester! I suspect that they at least have this info online by now.

Costa have an allergy handbook behind the counter with red/green/yellow (yellow is produced in same factory as) charts of everything but they don't really advertise it, wonder if other places do

I was going to say Wagamamma and Pizza Hut, but they've already been mentioned.

A lot of restaurants will check for you, but it does depend on how helpful and knowledgeable they are. If you insit that they check they usually will - just be prepared to walk out if they clearly aren't taking it seriously.

We've had "pizza will be fine then" - er, no, not if it has any cheese on it, and "the sausage is organic" - so does that mean it containg organic egg, or not? We've also had lovely staff who, for example, have come with dessert menus, apologetically explained that the ice cream contains egg (now grown out of milk allergy, hurrah!), but the chef suggested giving her some strawberries if she'd like (nowhere on menu, she did like, very much).

A friend takes her DDs to the local vegan restaurant - you obviously have to watch out for nuts, but her allergic DD loves being able to eat cake.

If you're in WGC, Saino's cafe will have a folder, so you have to ask. They will show it to you, if you ask. I do think that most places just don't train staff enough in this area, which is appalling when you consider that food allergy is potentially life threatening to some!

Waitrose cafe staff went and got a folder for me once with all the ingredients. They were extremely helpful.

Nandos, wagamamas, dominos.

Can't think of any others at the moment, but most big chains are pretty good with ingredients lists.

DC and I have multiple allergies and we stick to McDonalds, Pizza Hut and our local Frankie & Bennys where they now know us and are great. Though where we live there isn't much choice anyway.
Near us there is a independent cafe that are fabulous, the food is great and everything is made fresh so she knows exactly what is in each dish. We go there mostly now and she even keeps some things in for the DC so they can have a pudding. She must make a fortune off us!

We avoid Starbucks because they have a folder of ingredients but in our experience it isn't often up-to-date so I daren't ever trust it.

Joe Delucci's which you find in a lot of shopping centres do dairy and egg free ice cream and have an allergy card you can look at. The DC were most delighted.

When we were in NYC we went to Babycakes and it was amazing, we could basically eat everything, and we did. Wish there was one near me, though I'd be a lot fatter if there was!
