DS at nursery is making birds nests with shredded wheat and chocolate. He can't have wheat so want to send something in that will work in the same way.

Any ideas??

Can you do it with rice krispies? Not hugely nest-like, but you can get it into the right shape.

puffed rice or popcorn - or the mixture of all the above?

my thought was popcorn too. Are they being a bit daft wanting to do this with gf child in the group? My dc are DF and their nursery & school seem to check that things are ok for them with the general theory that the other kids can have what mine can, just that mine can't have everything iyswim.
another thought, haven't a clue what's in them but would it work with those "brandy basket" things?

Thank you ladies... DS isn't GF just WF so can take part in alot of things they do. However, they made gingerbread men and he did make them and was HYSTERICAL he couldn't eat it so thought would try and make an effort to come up with something he could eat.

Sadly oatibix have wheat in (or they used to I will recheck in the shop)

Shredded coconut sounds good :O)

I just couldn't think of anything myself.

No - the full-size Oatibix don't have wheat, although some of the minis do. Last time I checked the plain mini variety had gone wheat free as well, I think. Worth re-checking.

Shame for him about the gingerbread men My ds is WF (and alas can't tolerate oats either) and is generally quite good about accepting what he can and can't eat, but would definitely throw a wobbly at making a gingerbread man and being told he couldn't eat it. I doubt it would have come out very nicely, but could he have made it from GF flour?

Ooo tribpot will check the oatibix again then - couldn't believe it when I did look and they had wheat in!

They could have made it out of GF flour but I guess they didn't think about it, he was gutted that day, most things he accepts easily but the gingerbread man tipped him over the edge lol!!

Am off to supermarket later so will get some oatibix

for the future can we collectively come up with alternative suggestions to make?

How about decorating pizza (with gluten free pizza bases from Sainsburys)?

Tesco do a lot of the wheat free/glutten free flours ir potato flour and rice flour. Also I have a very good website that do good gf and wf stuff such as sausage rolls, vol au vent cases, you know all the essential stuff in life!! I need a wf diet and its taken me years to find good quality stuff but I think there is a lot more stuff around these days.

You could buy wf/gf biscuits and decorate them or rice cakes. I also have a recipe for gingerbread men and chocolate brownies.

BenFMsmum, could you post your links? There are definitely a few of us who could benefit from your research!

The website for ready made products is www.gfdiet.com Also my sainsbury's does fishfingers, chicken nuggets etc again things you can live without till you have to and then they become must haves iykwim!! Perhaps you could ask one near you if they could stock them, if they don't already. Do you want the recipe for gingerbread men?

GF Gingerbreadmen: 275g gf plain flour, 1.5 teaspoons ground pure ginger, half teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 125g butter, 125g caster sugar, 2 tablespoons golden syrup melted.

Seive flour, ginger and bicarb in a bowl. Rub in butter.

Stir in sugar, then add syrup and mix to a dough (add a little water if too dry or more flour if to sticky)

Roll out between two sheets of greaseproof paper until 5mm thick. Cut out using a 10cm cutter.

Place on greased baking tray and bake in 170 degree/ 325 degree or gasmark 3 oven for 10 minutes.

Leave to cool slightly before transferring them to a wire rack.

Decorate!!

When I made these they were quite hard to move when in the raw state so you have to be quite careful that they don't fall apart. I don't suppose headless gingerbread men would be the same!!

What sort of things do you get for your ds? If I can help with anything else you're looking for then let me know!! I've been wf myself for about 5 years now and have come across most of this by accident!!
