right i will try to keep it short.

my ds is 13 months, coming up to 14.

for six months he was really sicky and once we got to six months he stopped being six so much but he constantly filled his nappies.

i did speak to dr and hv about it and was told it was nothing.

anyway when he got to twelve months we changed him off formula to cows milk and it just went crazy!!! he was being sick again, really bad in the night and the nappies were worse.

after speaking to a friend i realised that he could be milk intolerant.

so we switched him to soya and now he has one bottle of milk a day and his cereal made with soya. we still use normal butter and i limit him to three yoghurts a week (this is a recent thing as one a day was not good), all home cooking is done with normal milk. this balance has been worked out with trial and error and it seems to be working.

anyway i was speaking to a friend and she took her son to the drs as after speaking to me she thought her 10 month old might be the same. the dr said he maybe and that they are going to do more tests. he then stated that he should not have soya as it could make him infertile.

now i went to the drs about ds and i was told that what i was fdoing sounded ok and that was that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now i did research soya and i know it is hotly debated and that there are issues etc etc but my friends dr sounds a little heavy handed.

now i am really confused and worried really!!

i have to say since he has been on soya he has been a different baby. he fills a nappy once/twice a day and it is much more solid. he is much more settled. eats loads and has gained loads of weight! he was always a scrap but now seems to be a better size for his age.

My DS was the opposite of yours and was suffering from chronic constipation. The link has been found between cows milk and constipation although there is minimal information on it. He has been on infasoy since just after Christmas and poos are now regular and normal and I awaiting an appointment from the hospital dieticians. I am bumping with interest as I would hate that to be the scenario for DS.

sorry for the late reply - but it seems like no one's gotten back to you. My son has a dairy allergy too so I researched this last year for him.

There is concern about babies (especially < 6 months) being on all-soy diets but this is due to the large amounts of soy they consume. In smaller quanities (since your son is weaned) there is not the same link. So personally if it was my son, I'd not worry.

However there is another option - we took my DS to see a dietician and got him a prescription for special milk (Neocate Active) that is designed for 1+ children with milk allergies. He's happy drinking it and I use rice milk for other drinks. My son used to have a worse milk allergy but as he gets older (19 months now) I've been able to introduce yoghurt and cheese. It might be worth asking (I had to ask several times) for a referral to a children's dietician for advice. And insist on a children's dietician! We saw a regular one first who really didn't know what to do for us.
