question about food thats safe for nut allergy child

My dS has a tree nut allergy, especially cashews, however I avoid peanuts too.

Can someone give some idea of what foods to avoid and foods that are ok - I hate it when reading labels that say may contain traces of nuts or made in a factory that uses nuts, it is so unhelpful.

We are yet to see the Allergist, so not sure of other possible foods allergies yet but we know he had a tree nut allergy, he also has eczema and has done since birth.

To be honest all sorts of foods can have the 'may contain traces of nuts' warning, so you really do need to keep reading the labels.

The worst offenders tend to be chocolates, cakes/biscuits, breakfast cereals and processed veggie food eg veggie burgers but I have found the warning on sausages, jams and other unlikely stuff before.

My friend (adult) with a nut allergy eats most foods that say 'may contain traces of nut', mostly without any trouble but even she will not eat chocolate or cakes labeled in this way as she has reacted in the past, so these are definitely things to look out for.

Thanks wb. I agree about cakes, chocolates, biscuits and cereal - they seem to make DS's skin flare up.

Just asked my kid - chocolate - galaxy bars, milky bar, kitkats, smarties, chocolate buttons (check label), aero, rolos. Ice cream Vienetta or Magnum (not almond, obviously). Cereal riciles, coco pops but not most other chocolate ones like coco rocks, wheetos, some cornflakes (check labels). Can't have frosties.

tatt - are these the foods that are ok to eat or not?

mostly its a list of the tricky foods that are currently OK - so magnum has no nut warnings except on the almond ones. Ricicles, wheetos and most cornflakes are OK, most other chocolate cereal isn't. All the sweets are free from nut warnings. For bsicuits you can get jaffa cakes (branded ones - some supermarket own brands but not all; Sainsburys are OK). Bourbon biscuits are quite often Ok. Always check labels as these things can change with no warning.
