Allergies and intolerances

Help Dairy alternatives please...

DH has just been diagnosed with a dairy intolerance, this is to ALL dairy including sheep and goat products.

Previously we had just thought it was milk and he has oat milk, we also bought 'Pure' spread.

What other alternatives are there? Is there an alternative to cheese? I make bread in a bread maker and use powdered milk - can I use anything instead of this?

Thank you... Just get DS wheat intolerance sorted and DH gets diagnosed with this!!!

I have rice milk (called Rice Dream).

Loads of soy products - I think soy cheese?? not really sure as my DS can't have soy either.

Alpro do a natural soya yogurt and fruit soya yogurts that you can buy in Sainsbury's and I believe you can get soya cheese in health food shops. not sure how tasty it is though .

Swedish Glace ice cream (also Sainsbury's) is Dairy free. The chocolate one is really nice.

Sainsbury's free from range is quite good for dairy free luxuries like cake etc.

I feel for you....I have coeliac disease and a friend of ours is allergic to everything cow. Cooking meals for us all is a bit of a challenge!

Personally I've found all the non-dairy cheeses are pretty revolting so DS just does without but that is virtually the only thing he misses out on. We buy:

Pure or Tomor spread (use it in baking as well)
Swedish Glace ice cream
All-pro soya yoghurts
Rice Dream rice milk
lots of sources of plain, non-dairy chocolate and biscuits - bourbon cremes are usually good. If you live in an area with a kosher deli or kosher section in your supermarket look for anything marked Parve or Pareve - it will have absolutely no dairy in it.

My nephew uses the rice dream and my dd will eat it with her cereal when she stays over. So it can't be that bad

You could try making foccacia type bread that takes olive oil and nothing dairy. I use plain soya yoghurt in muffins, so it might be worth experimenting, replacing the milk powder in your bread recipe with a little soya yoghurt and less water.

There is a really useful recipe book called Cooking Without which has recipes with no dairy, no wheat, etc.

Dd is beginning to react badly to large quantities of soya as well as to dairy, so I'm struggling a bit at the moment, too.

Wow thanks ladies for all the info it has really been helpful.

I feel like I've entered another world - my shopping takes so much longer because I'm checking the ingredients on everything!

DS was rather upset at not being allowed wheat anymore (he keeps saying he'd rather have diarrhoea and tummy ache ) but now DH has been diagnosed with something as well DS is quite chuffed lol

Will check out the cook book mentioned.

  • Alpro yoghurts are good.
  • Every soy cheese is vile.
  • Vitalite spread is dairy-free.

I was diagnoed with severe dairy intolerance too with goats totally out as well. I hate the soya milk so tend to use orange juice on my cereal.

Have been using Pure too but must check out M&S.

The Alpro products are ok but not that tasty. Have bought non dairy ice cream (Swedish brand) in health food shop. Was also concerned about calcium and was recommended Tofu and buy sesame tofu sticks which aren't bad. Hummus is also dairy free.

Was away in the States for 2 weeks and found it a challenge there as I also have allergies to yeast, egg (which is dairy too) and wheat and suffered terrible stomach problems and my dermatitis has flared up big time. The supermarkets didn't really cater for intolerances with the exception of one which did a few products.

Iamdaisy - yes the chocolate Swedish Glace ice cream is divine. DD and her friend devoured mine and they aren't intolerant (both aged 6)

is He lactose intolerant then wangle? if he is then I second lactofree -tastes slightly UHT but not bad at all.
You don't need milk in bread ,just water -it comes out a bit more open and crispier - like french bread texture IYKWIM
Soy milk's a dead loss unless it's for cakes , it has a bit of a vanilla-ish taste. I end up buying the two types of Pure spread -the sunflower one for toast and melting and the soy one for spuds, sandwiches and baking . the sunflower one tastes a bit bland and the soy one makes your toast soggy .
As for cheese - not all holland and barretts do the fake cheese any more , I find independent health shops are more likely to have it, the only one DS2 likes is a mozzarella style cheese slice, but i've heard cheezly is acceptable for cooking
Here's a good place to find out what others like www.dairyfreeuk.com/

DS1 hasn't tried soy cheese yet (mainly because everyone says it's revolting) but he does have Tofutti Creamy Smooth from Holland and Barratt. It's a bit like Philadelphia and it's quite nice, especially the garlic and herb one. He has it spread on Dietary Specials Light Crispbreads which are milk, wheat and egg free so would suit both your DH and DS.
I have to agree Swedish Glace Chocolate ice cream is gorgeous
