My ds's (1.1) tongue is completely smoothered in ulcers and swollen. Is this an allergy

His tongue is completely and uterly smoothered. I'm really horrified and am worried that it was the fresh orange juice or (the only other thing that was new over the weekend) Bonjela. His lips are slightly swollen too. Any suggestions? I've put my regular teething gel (Anbesol) on it and he's gone off to sleep but the poor mite is really upset with them as he obviously can't suck his thumb and also he's gulping instead of swallowing (although air ways etc are fine).

Anyone else had this?

Hand, foot and mouth? Does he have any spots or blisters on his hands or feet?

it does sound like an allergic reaction: watch his breathing - hopefully it will subside.

My dd1 had it last summer and her mouth was so full of blisters and she was in a lot of pain.

He has little spots around his mouth but nothing on his hands or feet. He's had those spots for a while now and I've put them down to sensitive skin. he's crying again so will be back in a mo - not being able to suck his thumb is going to cause major sleep problems.

Sounds like something my daughter had a few weeks ago. The doctor said that mostly likely she had caught the cold sore virus and when you first get this the effects can be really nasty. Her tongue was covered in ulcers for a few days and it was really sore. He recommended lots of ice-cream and lollies to dull the pain and liquid food. It isn't likely to be nearly as bad the next time it flare up. Sounded grim but apparently by age 20, 80% of the population will have caught it. Of course, it may not be this at all, but it might be worth taking him to the GP to get it checked out.

Sounds like hand, foot and mouth to me too. My DD had it, and i couldn't see anything on her hands or feet, yet her poor little tongue had raging blisters on. I just dismissed as ulcers, until doc said it was HFM.

Hope tonight isn't too bad. If you're worried it's anything else, it's worth calling NHS Direct

Oh, and seem to remember that doc didn't prescribe anything - just bonjela and calpol. Took a good week to clear up
