Allergies and intolerances

unsightly prickly heat on ds 3yrs ...made worse by SUN LOTION! help!

which sun lotion is best for ds? he gets prickly heat all over his body and is made worse by the sun lotion i used this week! (tescos own kids one)
someone suggested a non-aqua based one........they are ALL aqua based surely!

When I had prickly heat quite badly in Switzerland 20 years ago a pharmacist there recommended P20 , which I'd never come across before - you put it on 30 mins before going out (and let it dry before dressing)

However I've still not used it properly (just avoid the sun now) and others have said it's not good because it doesn't screen UVA or UVB or something?

Sorry, 90 mins, not 30 - and it says do it again 10 mins after the first go, to make sure all skin is covered - might be worth trying?

dont know about sun cream but i have bad prickly heat and ive always used piriton to help..maybe give it to him before going out and applying sun lotion??

will check out tht p20 too as matalan sell their sun lotions pretty cheap i cant imagine it being much more than £6-£8?

My son has this every year. We've tried alsorts. The best one so far has been Uvistat. We buy it from our chemist who orders it in especially for us. His eyes swell and his face and body are covered!
Also, the doctor told me not to give Piriton if he was going out in the sun. Not sure why, just said something about his eyes....

my DS has enormous problems with sunscreens too - unfortunately, it's often a case of trial and error. We even took him to the GP to see if there was a sunscreen she could prescribe for him (he has quite nasty exczema (sp?)) - there wasn't!

I found (eventually) that E45 sunscreen was the only one that didn't make him come up in a rash - but it's pricey - and is never on special offer!

The instructions say your skin must not have had any moisturiser of any kind applied first - it must be clean dry skin for it to work properly. I will try it this year!

I use P20 - wash with plain pure soap - slap it on and then bumble around for about an hour before going out in the sun - but it's about £17.99 a bottle !!

I've been told that a non-waterproof one is the best. If you use a waterproof some sweat stays under the cream and irritates it.

i get prickly heat. the only cream i can use is Piz Buin Allergy.
Quite often on offer in Boots.

I would recommend \link{http://www.drhauschka.co.uk/Dr Hauschka} suncreams. They have special ones for children, are natural and smell lovely. My DD also had prickly heat and hasn't it since I started using their products.

thanks for that info pink chick - we took ds to gp and specifically asked her, and she said no - what;s the prescription one called?

Like amidaiwish, I found the piz Buin "Sun Allergy" one was great. For some reason I grew out of my heat allergy at about 28!

There are different kinds of sun allergy. I have something called polymorphous light eruption which isn't the same as prickly heat. Piz Buin allergy is great - doesn't exacerbate it, nor does uvistat.

In case this is what your daughter has, the only thing that prevents it is gradual exposure so my skin builds up resistance. And the easiest way to do that is with sunbeds but for a child, prolonged outside play earlier in the year might work. And salt makes it much worse so beach holidays might be a no no

thanks for the advice everyone...i'm going to try the E45 sun cream first...as i've used E45 for all my skin complaints...so hopefully it will work on ds......had no idea they done a sun cream! ....if that fails i'll try the p20

i suppose its down to ach individual gp?, but my brother in law who is a pharmacist has confirmed that children 'can' get suncreams from gp's, i suppose if you child's skin is sensitive to some creams etc??...i will check with him and find out if there is a criteria................

oh and BIL also tells me that alsthough it does what it say on the tin P20 only has uvb(i think?) and not uva, which doesnt deter from skin aging.One of them anyway, it is only said to contain one, so not much good for LO's needing full protection
