I'm badly allergic to cats (no great shame there), horses (big big shame!!) and short haired dogs like labs, boxers etc. We have 3 long haired dogs and I am absolutely fine with them. I agree that some animals spark off the allrgy whilst others don't.....

I'm allergic to animals, and my mum had a poodle.

Was allergic to that too. short hair is meant to be best, and you can get some spray stuff to spray on them to help.

Didn't help me though

There is one called a Bishon Frise which I think is much cuter than a poodle. There are a few around ask a vet they'll know. I am allergic to most pet hair, you can get a treatment which you take a series of injections to build up your immunity, ask your GP.

My GP wouldn't do those injections! She said just not to get a dog!

I used to be very very allergic to Cats and Dogs.
When I was still living at home my mum bought a devonshire Rex cat, which have short hair. It didnt set me off but I moved out not long after and everytime I visit now my allergy starts.

However I have 2 dogs now and have no problem with any type of dog in fact.

Its to do with the saliva of the animal rather than the hair.

I'm allergic to pretty much any animal - i worked and lived in a house with a wheaton terrier for a couple of years though, and had no reactions to him. he even slept with me some nights

Cheeryface I am allergic to furry animals & found a book at Pets at Home called "Sneeze-Free Dog Breeds" its a brilliant book which states all the breeds best for allergy sufferers, it was about £10 but well worth the money

Listed are:

bichon Frise
Irish Water Spaniel
Komondor
Poodles
Portuguese Water Dog
Puli
American Hairless Terrier
Chinese crested (hairless type)
Peruvian Inca Orchid/Peruvian Hairless
Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless)
Basenji
Chihahua
Coton De Tulear
Italian greyhound
maltese
Bedlington terrier
Kerry Blue Terrier
Schnauzer giant/miniature/standard
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

Although we just bought a short haired Jack Russell and am fine.

Hope this helps

Most good breeders would be happy for yopu to spend time with a few of their dogs to see if you react.

I seem to be affected by the saliva and get a red itchy rash where ever it touches.

hubby is allergic to cats, not dogs - hes a dog person - hmmm! Im not sure of the site but there is a biotech company in america that have genetically engineered hypoallergenic cats. Great if you are allergic, oh and happen to have about 7 grand to spend on a cat! Maybe a tamagotchi?

Puppies fur is also different to an adult dogs fur, so in some cases you may be ok with a pup but be allergic to it when it gets older.
