DS 9 months, has had an allergic reaction to fresh tomatoes and Aubergine. Minutes adter eating it his face puffed up and went bright red. I bathed him and it went away after about 5 mintues. Does this mean he will be permanetly to these foods or is it just an initial reaction to new foods.

Hi Cori

I think what this reaction shows is that your ds has an allergy to either tomatoes or aubergines now

He may well grow out of it in a few years but for now I would advise you to avoid giving him either (even a little bit) which might make the allergy worse and to take him to the doctor and see if they can confirm what caused it.

I believe that it's quite common for babies be allergic to tomato.

Yeah I reckon it's the tomato when dd was young especially when it touched the skin round her mouth, her skin would go bright red. They are a common allergen.

Tomatos are very acidic, and as babys skin is sensitive it can cause a reaction around the face and hands if child has touched it.

I would aviod naturally, but wouldnt just consider this an allergy.
I would re-introduce in a few months time as long as baby didnt have ezcema.

I would condsider this a classic allergy is other signs were pressent. Hives, vomiting , and diaohrea.

IT is possible to be allergic to tomatos along with all foods, but babies do react to highly acidic foods, and high salt foods, like marmite and bovril.

probably the tomato, quite a common allergen. Some people are Ok with it cooked but not raw. As you say his face puffed up I'd see a doctor and ask for a referral. Tomato allergies are not usually serious but rarely they can be. Any facial swelling needs some professional advice but as it went away quickly they probably won't refer you just tell you to avoid tomato.

Get a bottle of piriton anyway - it can be given below whatever age it says on the box if there is a serious reaction.

I'd also keep him away from latex (e.g. balloons) for another year because if it is an allergy and not just sensitive skin there's a link to latex allergy.

Even if he does have problems with tomato this is one of the allergies that can disappear as your child grows.

he actually had the same reaction to aubergine as well. I was wondering if they were the same 'family' both grow on vines , are seedy inside. He does have excema by the way.

yes tomato and aubergine are the same family with potato and tobacco. Not sure if anything else is in that family. definitely mention any other problem to the doctor, they should also ask for any family history.

Hi Cori
I had a sensitivity to tomatoes as a Child, same thing happened to me and caused a big panic! For years I could not eat concentrated Tomatoes eg Tomato Puree without getting a rash on my face. I never had a more severe reaction but each case will be different so avoid it for now. Now I still sometimes get tingling lips if I eat it. I have excema and get a similar thing with other high acid foods. Could be worth consulting the GP for a food allergy test.
