Lactose intolerant 10 mth old

Hi,

Posting on behalf of a friend (with consent) who is desperate for advice and hasn't found the health visitor and dietician particularly helpful. Her 10 mth old daughter is lactose intolerant. She has been to the GP who has taken stool samples etc. Daughter is breast fed and her weight gain has slowed quite significantly in the last 1-2 mths.

Does anyone have any suggestions of dairy/ lactose free foods that could help increase weight gain?

Thanks in advance Smile

Is she lactose intolerant or is she allergic to dairy as they are both different things? Lactose is the sugar in all milks (including breastmilk) whereas dairy intolerance/allergy is to do with the proteins in the milk.

My son had sma LF milk on prescription as my breast milk was causing a reaction too.

There are plenty of foods to try, just check all labels.
Finger foods like toast with a dairy free spread,
You can get lactofree products too when baby is ready for them, cheeses etc

I moved DD at around that age onto coconut and almond milks (with the agreement of the dietician). Soya milk didn't agree with her and I was concerned about the effects. My sister was severely lactose intolerant and was bought up on goats milk - you may want to look into that.

Otherwise I just checked all ingredients. My DD has grown out of it....some people do...but is still diary free through choice now

Goats milk contains lactose too. Are you sure it wasn't an issue with cows milk protein?

Maybe for her...twas the 1980s so I'm not sure they tested.

Goats milk still has lactose in. All mammalian milks contain lactose, it's just the sugar in milk. It's actually very unusual for babies to be lactose intolerant. Some will develop temporary lactose intolerance after a tummy bug but it usually resolves in 3-4 weeks.

What's much more common is cow milk protein allergies. DS is allergic to dairy and I had to exclude it from my diet or he was ill. He also really struggled with weight gain and we were advised by the paediatric and to add olive oil to his foods eg veg and give high calorie foods like mash potato with Pure sunflower spread, Helmans full fat Mayo is dairy free, avocado, hummus etc.

Give puddings for extra calories. Oatly cream is good for cooking and puddings, you can make custard with alternative milks such as oat, almond, coconut. There are lots of foods available in the free from sections at supermarkets.

I have lactose intolerance and there is such an amazing range of food out there.

I can eat buffalo mozzarella as M&S do a lactose free version. I use it to make pizza and pasta. The arla lacto free range is great too. You can get everything from a cream cheese, whole milk, mature cheddar, single cream, natural yogurt and even milkshake but perhaps not for babies Wink

You can get the lacto free stuff in most supermarkets. I have creamy pasta, deserts, pizza, cheese on toast and I haven't had a reaction from them at all.

The Arla range is not suitable for people with dairy allergies though only lactose intolerant
