Allergies and intolerances

I have not much left to eat.....

After having my son ( he is now 12) I was diagnosed with having an irritable bladder. Which basically means that most foods out there are awful for my bladder. So anything acidic..... Most fruits, different breads, certain foods. Pretty much most things really.

It took me nearly six years to figure out what I could eat.

Last year I became unable to eat wheat. So. I got used to that. That took away a lot of my food I couldn't eat. But I could eat some ( not much) of the wheat free stuff.

Then I realised that it was the tapioca flour in lots of wheat free stuff.

And then last week the doctor and I came to the conclusion that I can no longer have milk.

I have been left with not much left to eat. And I have had enough.

I can no longer really eat out anymore. When I meet people for a coffee etc I have to have water ( can't have fizzy or juices because of my bladder)

Life pretty much sucks right now.

Does anyone have such extreme diets. How do you cope with going out for dinner or just life in general?

Oh god yes, eating out is a problem and most websites, special recipe books only cover part of the restrictions. I have children so also difficult.

Have you had any advice about your diet? Would it help to list all excluded foods so we can advise some possible options?

Have you tried any naturopath, private nutritionists? For me, getting to the bottom of all of the things I needed to exclude plus supplementing the right things made me feel better and increase the foods I can eat.

To list the foods I can't eat would take far too long

I can eat eggs. Vegetables, meat rice and about three fruits. But the fruits are limited to about one a day or my bladder screams at me. Wheat free oats. Potatoes and that's about it. Kettle crisps.

The upside I don't put on weight and am loosing it rapidly. But oh my goodness I miss pizza ( could eat the gluten free pizza express )

I put a lot of garlic on stuff as it gives me some taste. I can have about five herbs so again I put that on everything as well.

Used rice milk on my porridge this morning and it was awful. What other milks are better?

Almond milk or Oatly milk are ok I find.

Another vote for oat milk here (I drank it when I was breastfeeding DD2 who is allergic to dairy).

From the point of view of eating out - would vegan-friendly restaurants be any help - at least that way you know there will be no dairy and everything will be based around vegetables? (Due to DD2's allergies to dairy and egg, when we are in a strange town I'll often look for vegan-friendly restaurants)

I have almond milk, but buy the unsweetened one. The other one is urgh. Can you have rice? Rice milk is ick on cereal (IMHO) but makes lovely rice pudding.

Yoyr diet seems a little bit like the pale diet so maybe use those recipes for inspiration.
Can you eat gram flour? Jack Monroe did a pizza with it

It sounds like it must be really hard, especially eating out. Do you ask restaurants to substitute things/go off menu? Lots of places are happy to do this.

Thanks for the links. Had a rough day yesterday. Tried goats milk. Yeah..... I'm allergic to that. Had no idea. Swollen throat numb tongue and lips

Oh, poor you.

If you are allergic to cow's milk, then you are usually allergic to all animal milks - the proteins are very similar. Probably best not to experiment with sheep's milk either.

Get your GP to refer you to an allergy specialist for proper testing and advice. DD and I both have serious allergies and restricted diets. DD's intolerances are slightly different to mine and so even though I'm very used to adjusting my diet I found the dietary advice for DD very helpful. It takes time to come to terms with a restricted diet but we've both come to terms with it
