ds is 13 months and allergic to egg and cows milk. i have had him weighed today and he has lost weight. his appetite isnt massive for solids so hv suggested plenty of snacks to increase his calorie intake.

the thinbg is im stuck for ideas that he can have due to his allergies and also he hasnt any molars yet so cant chew somethings.

i went to a dietician when he first started with allergies but they didnt tell me what to give him instead o the foods he cant have. i want him to have a balanced diet but as i say ideas are running short especially as i am avoiding nuts just in case.

any ideas anyone?

vn - can he have goats milk???? My ds is the same (also nuts!) but can tolerate Goats milk, so I used to make up milk shakes with bananas etc. Also Yoghurts (Goats Milk yoghurts) erm, will keep trying to remember other things. Am sure others will be along soon with better options. Can't believe that even after nearly 3 years I still have this fuzzy brain business.....

ahhh, my dd was egg and milk allergic at that stage . She also had a soya allergy but the soya yoghurts are quite good and filling.

Other filling snacks - avocado, mashed up banana on soggy toast (so he doesn't have to chew too much), plain toast or some of those organix snacks (lots are egg and milk free).

If her weight loss is a real problem, you can put olive oil on the toast or bread (we never bothered with the dairy free spread as dd didn't like it but if yours does, then smother the toast with that!).

My ds is the same. he eats lots of fruit and loves bananas also have just started him with soya yoghurts and swedish glace icecream made from soya his weight has gone up by 2 centiles. He was on duocal powder for a while to. he likes toast and honey and Lyme ~Regis organic fruitus bars which are cerial bars. Jam sandwiches etc they can have most things snacky. Even some crisps.

A good mix is essential but soya icecream is great.

good luck

as suggested, some biscuits are fine: ginger snaps, and bourbon biscuits.

rice cakes (not v filling though)
breadsticks and houmous
soya cheese on crackers (quite a few are ok)

thanks everyone, ds is not keen on avocado but i will persevere as i know they are good for him. i might try making my own guacomale. i havent tried goats milk as i was told the proteins are very similar to cows milk.

i have just made some blueberry muffins and honey and banana cakes so i'll see how he likes those

The proteins in goats milk are very similar, I am dairy intolerent and have been told to avoid goats milk. I have tried lactofree milk (got it from sainsburys) which is cows milk with most of the lactose taken out, and have been fine on it. I snack on rich tea biscuits (sainsburys ones are fine) and ginger nuts too. I also think those oatibix bitesize with sultana and apple are really tasty as a little snack (dry, like eating biscuits). They are produced on a line that handles nuts though so you may be a little wary. On a healthier tip does he like blueberries? They are nice and soft and kind of pop in lo's mouth when they bite them with their front teeth, which my ds thinks is very funny (he's 15 mths) I have a really good book, called Optimum Nutrition for babies and young children by Lucy Burney. It has all sorts of info on diet and recipes using other milks such as rice and soya. It's very good. I dip into it quite a lot. If he's not good with chewing try par-boiling veg for a bit to soften it up. Even if he doesn't really eat much of it he will get some benefit with the sucking and chewing, and it will train him into chewing also.
I'll have a think and see what else I can come up with that I eat!

Would definitely second gingermonkey's Lucy Burney book - I have her 'Boost your child's immune system' book which is really helpful as both DS1 and DS2 are dairy intolerant.

Have found that raisins and ginger nuts are good snacks and Seeds of Change organic cereal bars (Waitrose).
