Quorn

DD2 has an egg allergy (hives)... Quorn has some egg white in, what do you think? worth a try or not? She is fine with cakes etc. which have well cooked egg in, but has a severe reaction to omelette/scrambled egg etc.

Anyone else got egg allergies and know more about them?

As far as I understand it, most allergies are to the albumen in the egg - the white. So for that reason I'd probably be cautious about Quorn.

my DS is 13 months and anaphylactic to egg and allergic to CMP. i darent risk anything with egg in, not even cake etc as paed wont give me an epipen for him so i am very cautious and was told to avoid Quorn. its also not reccomended by manufacturer for children under 2 anyway

cows milk protein, so no yoghurts, from frais, cheese, choc etc for my DS. were having to go vegan to anable him to get enough nutrients and variety of foods as there seems to be milk and egg in everything these days

vnmum why won't hospital give you an epipen?

because DS hasnt had an anaphylactic shock yet. his reaction to egg starts within minutes of ingesting it with hives, stomach pains, vomiting, going limp, purple lips and diarrheoa. he even had a milder version of this reaction when i ate a fried egg with a runny yolk then breastfed him about an hour or so later, yet the docs say his reaction isnt severe enough and that i could do more harm than good by injecting it at wrong time. i would only use it if he had a bad reaction not willy nilly but they still wont budge

OMG that must be awful ds had first anaphylatic reaction to eggs at nine months and was given an epipen there and then, i wouldnt feel confident without one we have had to use it three times since consultant at hospital always says that use it sooner rather than later even if it didn't turn out to be a serious reaction it wouldn't do him any harm and it is always better to be safe than sorry.

DS first reaction to eggs was at 8months and it was anaphylactic there and then. i looked up on allergy uk and anaphylaxis campaign about the symptoms and they both said it was anaphylaxis yet doc says its a mild allergy and not anaphylaxis as he hasnt collapsed.

i mainly want an epipen for my peace of mind especially now hes on the move and picking things up and wanting to share food with other toddlers.

i have to say i get very stressed when out with him as i feel i cant relax as i have to watch him incase he gets hold of anything as i havent got an epipen just in case.

im just very vigilant about wioping high chairs etc.

i am in germany at the moment with the forces and using their healthcare system so i am hoping that when i move back to uk hopefully soon we might get a better doc

what is your ds reaction like?

his first reaction was a full blown anaphylaxis first he came up in big red blotches all over his face then was scratching his neck so i went straight to chemist which was 30 seconds away in chemist his mouth and lips started swelling he projectile vomited everywhere then started gasping for breath i took him next door to doctors and as i walked in ds collasped in my arms a nurse came running out gave him adrenalin and another injection by the time anbulance got ther he had started crying.
It was the worst moment in my life

The second time he was about 13 months and ate something off the floor at nursery i gave him epipen but didnt respond well and was rushed to recuss had to have alot more treatment

His last reaction was to something else we hesitated givin the epipen and tried to drive to a&e but ds collasped on the way so another ambulance job
Sorry its a long post but you really need to stress to hospital the importance of you getting an epipen.

well i take back my "severe reaction" comment... just hives. thank god.
terrified she may become anaphylactic, or has a nut allergy we haven't discovered yet (dh nearly fed her crunchy nut cornflakes on holiday last week, i screamed, he stopped just in time)

Any reaction is still upsetting and its awful living on edge all the time watching what they eat.

because DS hasnt collapsed and had breathing difficulties they say his reaction isnt severe enough for an epipen. i have avoided all egg products and it is the picking things up off the floor at nursey that i worry about.

from information i have read i am aware that his next reaction to ingesting egg could be worse than the first and that is what im worried about, yet they still wont give me an epipen.

after letting DH read your posts we are going back to GP to insist on one for my peace of mind as you just dont know when they'll pick something up or get given something by another child

My ds also has an allergy to eggs, amonst other things. He also gets terrible hives. I was also worried that he was not given an epipen in case his next reactions should be worse, but my main concern was an allergy to nuts, even though he has never had nuts and have never got a hint that he might go into anapylaxsis. I guess they are expensive, the shelf life isn't great from what i have read and in our case, ds also has a heart condition, so maybe they are right to not prescribe an epipen unless he has a nessessary reaction. As far as his allergy, we do total avoidance even though we are pretty sure he could handle small amoutn of well cooked egg, like in biscuits etc.

As for quorn, I try not to have it in the house as I became intolerant to it after the birth of said allergic child

Quorn causes nasty reactions in quite a few people, mostly vomiting and diarrhoea. I'd avoid the stuff altogether if your DD2 has allergies - have a look at www.cspinet.org/quorn/ - sorry I still can't make links work
