Q regarding nut allerges and food labelling

Hi,

We have been asked to provide food for the school party, but to ensure that it doesn't contain traces of nuts are there are allergic children in the group. What do I need to look for on packaging? Does it need to be explicit that it does not contain any traces of nuts or is it OK if it does not mention nuts?

I am thinking of doing some cheese and tomato tarts as I have some Saxbys ready rolled pastry I need to use up. Under allergy advice it mentions gluten but nothing else. Is this OK? I assume cheese, tomatoes, milk and margerine - which will all be used in teh bking will be clear.

Any advice from anyone directly affected gratefully received.

if it doesn't mention nuts then it should be OK. Avoid anything that says may contain nut traces, made ina factory using nuts or due to the methods used in processing this product is not safe for nut allergy sufferers. The tarts sound fine but you may need to confirm what's in it to the children. My nut allergic child will not eat food unless they can check the wrapping or are assured it is safe.

If you've been eating nuts or had nuts on the surface you use for rolling the pastry remember to wash carefully first, nut protein isn't too easily removed.

I can not add anything to what Tatt has said.

TBH I suspect that the allergic child won't join the communal buffet. I only want to do as we have been asked.

Thanks for your comments.
