Allergies and intolerances

Okay, so this is probably a really daft question...

...But are chestnuts nuts or seeds? I always thought that they were tree nuts, but since finding out this year that horse chestnuts are actually seeds, I wondered if the same thing applied to eating chestnuts!

I've tried googling, but I'm not coming up with anything conclusive. I just really want to get some for my dh, who puts up with enormous constictons on what he can eat because of mine and our dds allergies.

Drat, I suspected as much. Oh well, DH will just have to take himself off for a little foray into nutty heaven without me!

Why not start a thread to ask whether anyone with nut allergies can eat chestnuts?

My DH has always steered clear of chestnuts - he is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Dunno if he has ever actually checked, but we don't experiment with his allergy.

I do know that peanuts are actually legumes and almonds are in the peach family. My dad is allergic to tree nuts -- but eats these two as if they are going out of style!

My consultant's advice is that chestnuts are not "nuts" as in peanut/tree nut and that they are okay as is coconut. My ds is allergic to peanuts and has eaten both of these regularly.
