Calcium levels in Neocate/Nutramigen

Just wondered if most LO's who are on these also receive calcium supplements? I hadnt realised until the other day that they have about half the calcium level per 100ml of normal milk. So if i am just about managing to get DD to drink 12-14oz a day, in fact it is the equiv of about 6-7 oz of cows milk (which is where the guidelines for 1yr + milk levels come from)?

I realise calcium is also avail from other sources but dd is pretty fussy and wont take soya yogs or calcium enriched juices etc.

Just wondering anyway
thanks

if your dd is on neocate was it prescribed by dietitian or paediatrician, you should have been referred to dietitian at the same time, who can advise fully on mineral requirements.

Yes we saw a dietician early summer - when she was still on full milk quota so it was less of an issue. I have requested another appt and we are going back in Jan. However i never see much mention of this so i am just interested to know what others on these milks do once they are on lower levels.

thanks

I know quite a few babies who were tube fed neocate/nutramigen (my dd has Noonan Syndrome which often causes feeding issues and low weight gain - luckily dd had very few probs)
I'll ask if you liek and get back to this thread when I've had some replies if you like?

is your dd dairy intolerant jasper?
Also calcium depends on fat to be absorbed, many specialist formulas have less calcium, but are more readily absorbed IYWIM?
I've asked some people - they are in the US but will let you know what they say

Hi

My son is on Neocate Advance and is also on calcium supps (liquid calcium sandoz).

He was put on the supps when he was about one - this was when he changed from neocate to neocate advance plus he was drinking considerably less formula than previously.

It sounds like the same for your LO in which case I think you def need to see your dietician again.

Yes it does sound like we are going to need some supplementation. We are doing a dairy trial this week but its not looking too good (difficult to be 100% sure as she is picking up so much at nursery atm but i think its making her congested and whingey).

Are there any issues with sandoz - taste, side effects?

thanks
alice

Hi - sorry only just seen this.

Had no problems with the sandoz - I usually try and mix it in with his breakfast but if I forget I just give it off a spoon and he doesn't seem to mind!!

Hope the dairy trial is going well.

thanks wicker.

Unfortunately we had to abort the dairy trial as she got ill and has an ear infection (hope its not connected?!). So we will have to try again so that we are clear if we have a need for sandoz or not when we see the dietician in january.

My ds has never had formula of any kind but as he's allergic to dairy, he is also on a calcium supplement, calcium sandoz (he's 2.5 and been on it about 4 months now). He takes it just fine as medication as I can't add it to his breakfast as I already have to add an energy supplement to his brekkie, lol! The only problem that we encountered was with the dosage. It was requested to be taken once a day, but he didn't tolerate that much in one go very well, suffered from gastric upset and runny tummy, he now takes 3 smaller doses with meals and is doing great with it.
