Allergies and intolerances

How do I know if it's an anaphylactic reaction

Hi. My son has a peanut and sesame allergy but usually mild. We went out tonight and he accidentally ate a pudding with peanuts in it. A short time later he said his throat felt swollen. I looked at his throat with a light and the 'dangly' bit looked a bit smaller and swollen. I gave him piriton and about 30-45 mins later he said it felt much the same and looked much the same. It wasn't distressing him but felt odd and I think he was a bit panicked. I phoned nhs 24 as wasn't sure whether to give the prednisolone but they said to give it. How long should the feeling take to go away and would this be classed as a mild anaphylaxis? Also, how do you know when to move on to the next step or wait and see. Feeling a bit anxious now!

We were given a care plan for my son with signs to watch for and what to do with the various reactions leading to anaphylaxis shock. I would suggest to contact your consultant to have a care plan in place. You can also visit/call //www.anaphylaxis.org.uk/, who have information for you including specialists to help guide you. If you are unsure, you could also contact your GP for an emergency appointment so they can check his breathing. Better to be safe...

What the poster above said. I would ring the Anaphylaxis Campaign helpline for advice as future reactions can change/be more severe.

Anaphylaxis is usually pretty obvious and most reactions are very rapid.

I would go back and get advice, particularly on a care plan for the future and whether he needs an Epipen.

Hi,

my son also has nut and mild/moderate egg allergy, nut one is severe.

The specialist told us to be cautious at small restaurants and not to eat 'curries' without checking ingredients. He also said that if we dont know the ingredients for something, to dip one finger in the dish and rub on the inside of the lower lip. Wait and see if it swells up-if it does then it means it has nuts.

for signs of anaphylaxis-it doesn't matter how swollen the lip is or his face is on the outside---if he has trouble breathing or is making a loud noise when breathing then use Epi-pen..That is what I have been told.
