Allergies and intolerances

Escalating reactions

My lb is allergic to many things including cmp, tomato and oats. Every time he has an exposure to cmp his reaction is worse than the last one...his latest reaction was to biscuits which only had 1/2tsp of milk in the whole batch. He had a full body rash and swelling which took 3 days to subside. Should I be worried about the escalation?

if your lb is allergic to anything, he should not have even a small bit. even if it is cooked into anything. The more you expose him to allergen the worse it will get. His body is reacting to the allergen and it can be life threatening.

The biscuits were being given on the advice of the paediatrician who was confident that in such a small amount he would not react...sadly she was wrong.

You need to stop ALL traces of the food your LO is allergic to.

Ask your pediatrician or GP to refer you to an allergy pediatrician. Even if it is in neighbouring towns.

There's a book by Prof Branstoff called the complete guide to Food allergies and intolerances. You can buy it off amazon. Definitely worth buying and reading.

My DS also couldn't tolerate half a biscuit with milk in it. It is quite common now.

If you call the anaphylaxis campaign (01252 542029), they can direct you to a website with a list of 'proper' paediatric allergy clinics that you can access on the nhs. A general pediatrician may not have the resources or level of specialist knowledge about allergy that you need.

The anaphylaxis campaign can also give you general advice about allergy and how to cope.

I do agree that you should cut out all traces of foods your son is allergic to, until you have been referred to a specialist allergy paediatrician.

Have you got epipens?

Don't worry...after the last reaction all traces have been well and truly stopped!! No epipens..basically she said we didn't need them as he's never had an ana reaction. Will investigate how to get a referral tomorrow.
Thanks all

Facial Swelling is anaphylaxis?? - In addition to getting a referral for an allergist i would also request epipens from either your paed or your GP - which ever will get you them asap
