Allergies and intolerances

Allergic to pants? (not a joke)

I started PT with DS1 (2.5) last Weds and he went straight into pants. That night in the bath I noticed his buttocks and backs of legs were covered in angry red dermatitis - precisely the areas where pants cover the skin or touch it when being pulled up/down, but oddly not on his front at all. I put diprobase on the affected areas (he gets dry skin eczema on his tummy and legs) and it vastly improved overnight (he wears a nappy at night). The next day the same thing happened. And the day after. I then washed ALL the 100% cotton pants in case they had dressing on - no change.

Could it really be the pants? Any ideas what else could be causing it? He's never had eczema like this before or in these areas. He has no known allergies. He wears cotton elsewhere all the time.

Showed the HV today - she was foxed. She did suggest that he might be allergic to the potty, but I pointed out that then he'd be allergic to most toys too...

Spiker exactly the same thing happened with Tilly but it has cleared up now. I think that having a wet nappy (we use cloth) acted like a wet wrap as she her bumwas as soft as a baby's bum til then.
Perhaps we could try wrapping her feet in wee filled nappies?????

it could be the elastic in them?

Washing powder - DD was allergic to any powder other than surcare until about 6 months ago, but ONLY on her bum area.

That was meant to be "Wahing powder?" - not just a statement

Good thought Flame. I remember washing my nappies at my mum's when Tilly was tiny (pre excema) and her little bum was on fire in a complete nappy shape. We use Ecover or Surcare.

I don't think it's washing powder/fabric conditioner because (a) it started before I'd washed the pants, hence my initial thought that the pants had dressing on, and (b) why would washing powder/fabric conditioner provoke a reaction on his legs, when they've been sporting trousers washed in same since he was born?

I did wonder about elastic but it's covered by the cotton, and the dermatitis is all over his bum. And legs.

LL - how long did it take for Tilly's bum to recover? Did she get it on her legs too?

I'll give his pants the surcare treatment anyway. On the plus side DS1 doesn't seem bothered by it and isn't scratching. Yet.

could still be the latex causing the problem even if covered by fabric.
Try going without to see if skin calms down then reindroduce pants to comfirm that they are the problem.

It could be the dye in the fabric on such a sensitive skin area. try white underwear. And of cause no soap , shampoo , baby wipes , lotions to touch that area of skin.

just some ideas of the top of my head. must be uncomfy for baby.

Exactly the same thing has happened to ds1 - I expected his skin to clear up since potty training, but it's got worse!

Can't remember how long it lasted Spiker, not long altho she does occasionally get dry patches still but nothing like it was.
Can't even remember her being in nappies anymore but then again I can't usually remember why I've gone upstairs etc!!
How's his skin now?

Update if anybody's interested...

Eczema has pretty much gone now. I can only think that it was the dressing on the pants and that it took several washes to completely remove it. I'm not very satisfied with that explanation but I can't think of a better one. Main thing is that his bum is restored to near-baby-softness!

Thanks for all the advice.

ha! sussed it. he's allergic to Pampers bed mats if he wees on them during his nap. He's fine if he's dry but his skin flares up if he wees. Which accounts for it only happening on the buttocks/back of legs and not his front at all.

Maybe not allergy as such, it's contact dermatitis I guess, um don't know if that counts. But he's never had nappy rash and he wore both cloth and disposable nappies, so it's not just the wee causing it IYSWIM.

(I know nobody is watching this thread, but feel so chuffed that I've worked it out that I had to write it all down!)

I can imagine it was very satisfying figuring that out!
