Allergies and intolerances

Pet allergies - how to reduce them?

My parents bought a standard poodle puppy last summer. My sisters, who still live at home, and my dad all have animal allergies. They bought a poodle as none of them are allergic to poodles.

Unfortunately I am. The allergy is getting worse as time goes on. If I touch the dog I get mild hives. Within 5 minutes of entering the house I start sneezing. If I touch my eyes they puff up. If I stay for any length of time my breathing gets more difficult. After I leave I usually cough for most of the 1 hour drive home. Once home I have to shower and wash all my clothes.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the effect the dog has on me? It is his house, not mine, so I don't feel that I can ask my parents to make many changes.

I'm really close to my parents and I'm struggling with this situation. We are supposed to spend the day there on boxing day and I'm already worrying about it.

I suffered from asthma in my youth and feel there's an asthmatic component to this allergy so I'm going to see my GP about that. The other confounding factor is that I'm breastfeeding so solutions involving drugs may not work.

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences.

Try making a paste with organic ground turmeric and olive oil; take 2 tspoonfuls 3 times a day with a glass of water. It totally cured DS of his awful cat allergy and it works for any allergies. it'd be good for BF (maybe make the L.O's poos a little yellow to start with Grin).

Ppeatfruit Tell me more about your remedy? How long did your son take it for, was it when he was exposed to cats? Has he never reacted again?

When you say it works for all allergies? Any further examples?

DS has a long list of food allergies, chemicals, dust, animals. Food we can control but the rest are challenging!

He took it for all the time he was staying with us and we have a house cat and outside strays that we feed. It needed to be given at every meal to remain effective. So he still takes it if he feels that terrible tickling, sneezing and runny eye symptoms. (he's an adult BTW).

I take it for diary allergies and weight loss (it's amazing).

When he was young he took the chinese herbal remedy tea for asthma which hasn't recurred. But turmeric is loads cheaper!

I had a Google and couldn't find much about the turmeric thing. I found a lot about desensitisation though and that sounds more appropriate if I was actually going to be living with the animal. Actually I just want to be able to go there once or twice a month and stay overnight a couple of times a year.

when we had our cats, I spent a fortune on petal cleanse and other sprays for the furniture etc which were supposed to help with pet allergies. It was for my baby DS so not sure whetehr they were effective or not. Worth giving it a try though.

Jolly Try googling Earth Clinic which will give you a good idea about it.

Thanks ppearfruit. DS has a Chinese concoction which he takes for asthma though we are still in the early days but it helps with reactions, though has yet to stop them happening.

I am curious about your dairy allergy, does taking turmeric allow you to eat dairy without reactions, how often do you take it, for how long and what were your reactions like before?

well misty I follow my blood type so i eat some goats cheese and a little ricotta. No cows milk products I used to get hay fever symptoms quite badly when having them.As I get older i notice my sensitivity is worsening if I have some accidentally or I'm out at a restaurant IFYSWIM. But with the turmeric it's totally under control. It's magical it helps sleeping and weight loss too!!

Just had a look and I have home cleanse spray for furnishings, petal cleanse which goes on the pets and air cleanse for spraying the air, and some allergy relief wipes which you wipe the pets with. I don't need it any more so I could send it to you for the cost of the postage. PM me if you're interested.

I am very allergic to anything with a fur cats and dogs.
if I need to go somewhere with pets I take a steroid nasal spray for a few days before with helps with my symptoms (itching, sneezing, wheezing).
I try to avoid visiting and try to meet up at my house or in the park.

I'm also allergic to anything with fur. Guinea pigs are the worst.

When booking a summer holiday cottage the most important thing is no pets. And we're thinking about moving but I do worry that we could get a house that's had pets.

So 2 things you can do; see how you feel after giving up dairy products completely for a week or so (if it makes no difference give up corn products instead) and or start taking turmeric 3 times a day!
