Baked egg challenge tomorrow

Just that really. Have made wheat & dairy free brownies with 2 eggs. They taste great thankfully but both DS & I are dreading it. Last challenge was wheat nearly 3 years ago and it went very badly. Trying to stay positive but hate thought of taking him to hospital to make him ill :-(

Good luck!!

I was very nervous about taking DS for another food challenge after a failed milk challenge, so can totally empathise!!

Lots of best wishes to you and your ds freefrommum will keep my fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

Can I ask, what leads to a food challenge? Improved skin prick results?

Hi freefrommum how did the challenge go?

UPDATE: It went really well - no symptoms at all! We're all very excited as it opens up so many new foods for DS, particularly wheat free breads which so often contain egg white and wheat/dairy free cakes. Went straight to the supermarket and bought him some freefrom apple pies and sliced bread. We do of course have to monitor him for any delayed response such as eczema flare up or gastro symptoms and of course he's not going to be eating boiled eggs or omelettes any time soon but really hopeful. All feels a bit surreal at the moment!

harverina DS doesn't have skin prick tests anymore as he reacts so badly to them so decision to challenge is based on blood test results. In this case, his result for whole egg hadn't changed (still very high) but consultant decided to test for specific egg protein which came back low and he said that this suggested that he might be able to tolerate baked egg. Milk and wheat challenges won't happen until blood test results improve significantly. His wheat challenge 3 yrs ago was based on the fact that his skin prick test at the time was somewhat inconclusive and I knew that, unlike milk & egg, he was able to handle food containing wheat without any reaction. However, the challenge proved that he definitely can't eat it!

Yay that's great news!! You must be so relieved that he didn't react - for his sake in terms of him being unwell of course, but also because he will be able to eat more things!

Really pleased for your dsGrin

I worry about that too babybarrister. In fact, I had to go up to the school a couple of days after his challenge as he had been telling everyone that he could now eat egg (despite my best efforts to explain to him that he can't eat just anything with egg in it). The school were great thankfully but it is a bit confusing for DS (and others!)

My DS has a large egg SP wheal and they won't do a baked egg challenge. Yet he has tolerated baked egg in the past.

DD passed her baked egg challenge

I also don't tell people as they are likely to try to give her mayo etc. It is hard to explain exactly what she can have, so I don't bother and just say no egg.

This is really interesing - ds's first set of spt's (to baked egg and raw egg) were 3mm and 13mm. By his next appt the baked egg was 10mm and raw 14mm. Confusingly, at the same time his rast result had come down from double figures to something like 0.49, so still a postive, but much much lower. Any suggestion of him even coming into contact with traces of egg was met with that teeth-sucking thing that doctors do - which really didn't go any way towards reassuring me!

We have recently changed hospitals, and the first thing the consultant told me, before we had even done any sort of testing, was that she'd like to challenge him to baked egg. When he had the spts they only tested for raw egg, but the wheal had come down to 5mm, so I suppose there is a chance of him tolerating it in baked form. I had imagined that we didn't have a hope in hell yet. I guess it just boils down to which hospital you attend, and who you get to see on the day as to whether you get challenged or not Confused

Great news for your ds freefrommum. I do have a good stash of egg-free cake recipes, but I look forward to the day we can eat the proper stuff again!

His egg wheal was pretty massive, plus they wanted to do lentil, chickpea and sesame challenges so maybe they just thought he had enough challenges to be getting on with for the moment!

This is really interesting. DDs consultant has recommended a baked egg challenge despite +ve SPT... I've been putting it off because we've learnt to live without it and I'd been prioritising trying to get to the bottom of her cows milk allergy... but it's good to know that it's not as unusual a piece of advice as I assumed - I should revisit it.

Totally understand what's been said about keeping things simple for people looking after the LOs. It's hard enough getting to a place where you trust someone to look after them safely, complicating instructions makes things trickier - I tend to go for a blanket 'no dairy' rather than put people in the situation of having to make decisions about whether custard creams come under baked milk as in biscuits or boiled milk as in custard :-)

Maz, DD passed her baked egg challenge despite still having +ve SPT. The wheal was a lot smaller than DS's though.

Thanks trixy I'll get onto it!
