Hi there, my ebf 12 wo had dreadful 'colic' from weeks 3 to 8, so I cut out dairy in case was contributing. As well as wind etc she only was pooing every 4-5 days and v uncomfortable with it. She turned out to have a missed tongue tie and her symptoms have fully resolved since this was snipped at 8 weeks.

I left it a few weeks after her tt snip and reintroduced dairy over last weekend - I had a yoghurt and some cheesecake (realise should have been more gradual maybe?) and now she's back to not pooing - none since Saturday, exactly corresponding to my dairy intake.

Is this just a red herring or could the dairy have affected her so immediately? No input from GP etc so need some advice!! Thanks Smile

Yes, it could have affected her so soon (sorry if that's not the answer you were hoping for!)

My bf dc3 (now 15 months) is intolerant to dairy, soya, tomatoes, eggs, etc - and I know that with dairy, if I eat a single square of chocolate je will be up in pain every 2 hours the same night Shock

Yes dd1 was dairy intolerant with consitpation I had a twix when we delayed on a flight (starving!) and thought I would chance it. Way less than 24 hours and she was angry and shouty and in pain again (bad mother).

The consequences of a slip-up (in my diet, via breastmilk to DS) were within about 6 hours for us. Didn't cause constipation in the case of DS though - rather the opposite!

Thanks so much for the responses - really really helpful.

In your experiences do they tend to grow out of this? Thinking ahead to going back to work when she'll be 5.5 months. I can't express enough to build up a store so likely will have to use formula of some sort. Confused

They do grow out of it but 5.5 months is extremely optimistic. My son was on a normal diet by 2 yrs old (limited amounts of dairy) and we were told the vast majority of kids will have outgrown it before they go to school, but I don't know any who outgrew it before a year old. You can get CMP free formula but it tastes vile so think about introducing it early as it may take a while. If your LO reacts to the minute traces of CMPI that pass in breastmilk you will need one of the amino acid formulas like Neocate or Nutramigen AA, the hydrolysed formulas like Pepti or Nutramigen 1 contain peptide fragments similar to what passes in breastmilk.
