I drink a bottle of wine every day and can't seem to stop

The days that I try not to do it im left feeling very lost and depressed.

It is making me fat, lethargic and rubbish

Tips please of how to get this dreadful habit in check - Id like to still enjoy wine but at a less destructive/more sociable level

I don't drink anything other than wine really- if I have a lager or something I don't feel compelled to drink more but one glass of wine and before I know it ive finished the bottle

Help!

My DH was like this...he has managed to stop entirely. He did it by changing his whole diet...he gave up sugar and processed foods first...then he tried his best to avoid the wine...only buying organic wine...which is hard to get where we live.

Gradually he's become non dependent and now hasn't had more than one beer at a time and certainly not daily, for more than a year.

Go to the doctor or look on mumsnet for the Brave Babes Battle Bus in relationships. It's a supportive thread for those who have a problem with alcohol.

How are you doing OP?

I am the same. I finally asked for help after struggling and failing for months.
Basically, all the reasons/excuses/justifications I used to use don't work any more. I am incredibly happy. I have no sorrows to drown. But alcohol has been my best friend for years and it is difficult to give it up. But I am trying. I am into week two of cutting back.

How are you now?

I wasn't a bottle (except night outs and weekends where it would be lots over a bottle) but over half a bottle a night.

I won't lie - it was hard to cut down. But now I don't drink in the house except for maybe a Friday night and when I go out.

I feel so much better for it.

I also know two or three friends who struggle with this two - two of them having a bottle a night like you.

What has helped me -

  • Focus on that grotty feeling you have on a morning. I would be better as the day wore on, not with a hangover a such, but def grotty.
  • Compare said grotty feeling with nice bright feeling you get without.
  • Diet lemonade in a wine glass. It IS a habit. I wouldn't even fancy drinking sometimes but then when I had the first few sips I was on my way and wanted more. The diet lemonade trick gives you something to sip.
  • Ride the waves of cravings until they decrease and once again think of grottiness and they do subside. A trigger for me is having a nice chat with DH on sofa, enjoying myself - I just want to reach for the wine and increase the enjoyment! But just hang in there and the creast will fall away and you'll be back to enjoying your diet lemonade.
  • Thinking of my looks. My face looks generally more haggard the morning after - no doubt. Puffy eyes are the worst for me.

    Hope that helps!

i stopped about six months ago, I joined Weight Watchers the points scared me into not drinking :) 30 points a day 6 in a glass of wine :0

I can generally say I feel so much better! My skin is better, my eyes, my teeth (red wine is my wine of choice) I don't get that's horrible ugggh it's morning feeling, I used to get pain in my joints think I'm slightly allergic I have more money! I feel happier and calmer

I will ever ugggh it's morning tomorrow as have awful insomnia that is driving me slightly nuts! After I spent last night drunk first time in ages, and I have been miserable all day and a horrible cow to my DP.

Yup best thing I've ever done is knock the wine on the head.

Drinks in wine glass is a good tip too, I do the same... I make myself non-alcoholic cocktails too from time to time as well or drink tonic water for some reason tonic water makes me feel like I'm having a "drink/treat" it works for me

Does it cause you problems? Do you live with anyone else?

It causes me problems in that I hate myself for it every day and spend most of my days feeling ok but slightly foggy

I don't drink and am happy to check in on this thread to encourage those of you that want to stop . We have a family history of alcoholism on my mothers side of the family , fortunately not my mother ,and growing up with an alcoholic ,pub landlady grandmother was enough to put me off drinking . Good luck with tomorrow caramel

Will you be at work? I mean are you 'safe' during the day (IYSWIM)?

I drank a lot......couldn't put the bottle away.

Am practically teetotal now.

I just stopped. Did dry January which became dry February etc etc until I did a year.
Joined SW in January and have lost 3 stone.

You can do it. Just don't buy it for a start.

Chopz · 27/12/2015 23:02

Can you try having your first glass later in the day?

When do you usually pour a glass for yourself? What's happening?

Report
Chopz · 27/12/2015 23:04

Maybe start by buying one small bottle and having it at 8pm
