Sorry but another request for a book club idea - please help!

(12 Posts)
Hi, our book club is fairly light weight and its my turn to pick a book. I've enjoyed Patrick Gale - Rough Music and Notes from an Exhibition, The Other Hand, Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, Secret Life of Bees, Random Acts of Heroic Love. Didnt like the Book Thief, Additions, Jodi Picoult ....

So, am looking for something not too heavy and not too long but with enough to talk about. Any ideas would be great as I'm off to the bookshop this weekend to try and choose.

Thanks a lot.
Our book club has just read East of the Sun by Julia Gregson which was really good and easy to read.
The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee by Rebecca Miller
The little Chinese Seamstress.

Crow Lake - Mary Larson, The Secret Life of Bees - Sue Monk Kidd - I think these both fit the brief.
Kicking myself for forgetting The Color Purple! Excellent book which generated a really good discussion.

But I think OP has already done her book shopping.

We have recently read

Suite Francaise - Irene Nemerovsky
The Accidental (divided the group!)
The History of Love - Nicole Krauss
Everything is Illuminated - Jonthan Safran Foer
The Book Thief (but I see you've done that)....

can't think of any more off the top of my head at the mo but these all led to good dicussions.
The Great Gatsby - lots to discuss (money, gender, sex, race ...)
Ameriacn Wife by Curtis Sittenfield

Run by Ann Pratchett

Spies by Michael Frayn

I've read it and enjoyed it. Quite a quick read for this time of year. What about the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas? My BG just read that and we had an interesting discussion.

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
