My dh's uncle has done a Phd in American literature and we would like to get a nice edition of one of the great american novels.

Any ideas?

Hmmm, my knowledge of American lit is not great but what about the Rabbit series by John Updike?

Or if you are looking for something less modern, a Henry James? I've only read The Turn of the Screw and The Portrait of a Lady so would be hard pressed to recommend one in particular.

Great Gatsby - or other FSF.

Hemingway - any of them

John Updike or Philip Roth maybe (depends on his taste)
