I do know who killed Asmodean but can't remember right now. Don't think it was Lanfear.
Read it after The Dragon Reborn, it fits best there I think.

lol, dont know! I am hoping its someone from left field like Verin, but I suspect it was Lanfear.
So... when do I read New Spring?

Oooh a WoT thread!
I am thinking of embarking on a re-read, I think if I started now I might get there by November!
I too was heartened to discover that it's going to be 3 volumes. 'Tis a bugger that we have to wait so long for the end, but I am glad that there is the intention to do it justice and hopefully wrap up all the lose ends.
Lan - he makes me do this
The most important question though - who killed Asmodean!?
Well. I have started my great re-read! Hooray! However, after settling in nicely to EotW and feeling as pleased with it as the first time I read it, I remembered New Spring! So, what do you wise peeps think the ideal order is to read all of the books? Its too late now for me to read New Spring first, so I was thinking around books three to five. Any thoughts? I am really looking forward to reading it as I have only read it once so far!

For nostalgia sake so far we have had several glares, one arms folded firmly beneath boosom and many many sexist all men are useless and all Women's Circle are wise and fantastic references. Lovely stuff.

lots in charity shops - reckon people thought it would never get finished - time i can't help with.
i need to buy and re-read, but dont have the funds or time >.<
TwoSunnyDays you could just sniff at him and then go drink some tea.
If it were Lan I would understand it!
i do detest the harem that is gagging for Rand however.
Truly annoying.
Its so great to find people who understand!

I started reading them when the second came out in paperback, far too long ago to contemplate.
I find that the longer Nynaeve spends with Lan the more I like her. I hope he doesnt have to chose between her and Moiraine. Rand is the last (for me) for his character to develop enough maturity and depth for me to actually like.
If he doesnt get it together in the next book I may have to fold my arms and glare and maybe tug my braid, or something along those lines!

ah yes that coincides with brief sojourn in LA LA land.

I am probably providing dreadful evidence of my geekishness but here goes (the delights of Google/wiki):
EotW : feb 90
TGH: nov 90
TDR: oct 91
tSR: sept 92
FoH: oct 93
LoC: oct 94
CoS: may 96
PoD: oct 98
WH: nov 00
CoT: jan 03
KoD: oct 05
The others should come out autumn of this year, '10 and '11.
EotW is copyrighted 1990 so early 90s but he used to bash out a book every 1-2 years I think then slowed down in early 00s. I was working in a bookshop and we'd all read them (geeks? Us?) and were waiting for WH to come out. then there was 3-4 years til bk 11 IRRC.
god how long has it been then? Cause I started when book TWO came out!!!!
I was living in LA at the time I remember that much so was it in the 80s? ffs.
Apparently he never had any idea how many books it would take...it was going to be 1 but he couldn't finish it in that (EotW is a lot faster paced than the rest don't you think?) then it was going to be a trilogy and so on......11 books later he pops his clogs and we're left in limbo

.
Isn't it great being able to talk about Nyneave, Lan Alanna or put in acronyms like CoT (the one I'm on now) and people know what you're on about?
KM I started reading them when book 6 came out 13 yrs ago. Definitely worth perservering with.

Lan [sigh]
Its OK that will be the American cover I think. What is happening about RJ's title? Looks like it wont be used?
O yes Lan! Wasnt it amazing when Nynaeve did what she did in the last book! (dont want to spoil it, do we need a spoilers thread for people to avoid?)
oh thanks
you know the cover is not looking good to me
I like the length and the complications, its what makes it stand out from the others (shorter fantasy) for me. I like shorter series too, and each have their place. Anyone read Joe Abercrombie?
Not thinking of Alvairin! I need a re-read and I think i will start soon.

Ooh more Wheel of Time fans!
For FrannyPleased to see that you're all annoyed by Rand. He suffers from lead male syndrome, also suffered by Frodo ie whinging and wandering off a lot whilst being a general liability.
I like Perrin, most vexed to see some Perrin bashing on here.
However, Lan, oh Lan.

mind you last time i read a book after a recommendation on here it was ruddy TWILIGHT <shakes head>
tell me more please [intrigued]
i don't know what you are talking about
I don' think it is fair to suggest RJ was 'not capable' of finishing what he started. Unexpected incurable and sadly fatal illness intervened: he was far too young.
I am as frustrated as the next fan about his diverting himself into the prequel etc instead of finishing the main story arc, but he didn't know he was time limited.
I stopped at book nine or ten I think, and then threw them away. I just didn't think I could cope with re-reading them all again (even though they were quite enjoyable), and they seemed to me the sort of series where you had to remember what happened in book one to follow the action in book ten. I kept muddling the characters up because there were so many people with similar names, and forgetting who had been revealed as wicked etc
To be honest I have my doubts about authors who appear incapable of finishing what they have started - often the books get less and less compelling as they go along, and then finish with a real anticlimax. It seems to be an unfortunate feature of Fantasy books (which I love). Now I avoid starting any series where I can see there is already a row of them, and especially where there is a one a year thing going on. That said I am really looking forward to both the next R.R. Martin and the next Janny Wurts!
Is it out?
i didn't think they could wrap it in one volume tbh
sigh. i am of two minds about this. I was very sad when i heard that rj passed away. I started reading this series at BOOK TWO. So that's what? 14 years of my life or some such. no. MORE. Whatever have you.
i've just about given up on the whole thing....
It is long-winded. But not (IMO) unnecessarily.
But of course I would think that.
I'm impressed that so many have managed to stick with the WoT series. I started reading it years ago and absolutely loved the first few books. Got as far as about book 7 (I think) but I got really fed up with it as it seemed so unnecessarily long-winded.
Alviarin is Head of Black Ajah, maybe you're thinking of her?
Alanna is just hot headed and prone to acting on the spur of the moment and a little irritating and drippy.
Only got as far as book 10 so have skipped most posts as I don't want to spoil this!
dxx
Reading that first sentence makes me want to see one of the Black Ajah doing an Ali G impression!?
I think she's just foolish and annoying. Bonding Rand is obviously very nasty, but now she gets so much of his pain etc down the bond that she's gone a bit wimpish and pathetic.
Isnt Alanna black? Or is it she is just annoying? I am really enjoying the bits in the White Tower where they hunt out the Black Ajah, I think there will be many many more than they ever thought possible. Remember in EotW it was a hush hush never spoken of thing, now they are everywhere!
Must start my re-read soon I think! This thread has got me thinking about it all again!

Yep big

at Alanna.
Not married yet. But 3 way warder type bond that includes Min despite her not channeling. I recently got to the bit where Alanna gets all arsey about someone else having bonded him

Well done on getting a job trillian

I don't think he's actually married to any of them, is he? There's a big freaky warder bond thing going on though.
Actually - on first reading, my brother and I also stopped around book 5 because we got bored. Then bizarrely about 7 years later we picked it up again and hooked our sister up too. So your DP just needs to persevere... or start from the beginning!
I can't believe I'm only joining this thread now! I think Trillian and I chatted about this before (in the nerdy star trek thread!

)
I hadn't heard about making it three volumes. Teeny bit annoying, but at least we're getting somewhere finally. Rather cynically, one does wonder if this is all about keeping the gravy train going. God. I am horrendous.
I am definitely going to have to reread completely between now and then, which just means another big argument with my various siblings about who owns which book (you'd think with three of us all reading the same thing for the last 20 years we'd have figured out to LABEL them by now...

!).
As the books go on, Matt and Perrin definitely become more interesting whle Rand gets less and less interesting. Although I've always loved the multiple wife thing and thought that was quite funny. Please remind me - Min hasn't become the third wife yet?
I finished winters heart last night.

I've found her dull all the other times I've read them but not so much this time. My DH had stopped reading for ages til I got him into WoT. He's now a bit of a fantasy fiend.
I am trying to get DP to read them, but he doesn't allocate time to reading in quite the same way I do (and in fact I spend less time reading now there is MNing to be done!). He's got as far as book 6 but is slownig a lot, nto sure if he'll make ti all the way as the later ones do drag on a little. He's saying that Egwene is boring, but I
know that he must be nearly at the point where she gets dragged off to you-know-where to be you-know-what (or maybe you don't, which is why I wrote it like that

).
nov 3rd so depending on reading speed/time allowed reading yes, it is possible
3 books? oh good grief.Though as long as I have something to read in the autumn...But I want to know how it ends!
Yes ,I want to know about Verin, and Cadsuane.(and who the un-identified Forsaken are in the real world).
Much prefer Mat to Perrin and Rand.Is anyone else annoyed by how catty and vindictive the women are,in general? Everytime I re-read this annoys me more..
Do I have time for a great re-read before the next book?
I find it reassuring that it wont fit in one book!

oooh yes. I've just been in Far Madding so I was wondering about that.
I have been reading some of Brandon Sanderson's stuff, and actually he is pretty good!

Elantris is really very good. Enough to reassure me.
My main worry is that some of the smaller hints wont get tidied up. Especially about Verin, and what happened when she was young.
This is why you should really only read things written by people who are long dead. Then you know in advance if a series is finished or not.
<anyone fancy giving George R R Martin a kick? he's not dead, what's his excuse?)
3? I don't mind that much but Jordan used to churn out 1 a year was it? Then dropped to every few years. I hope we aren't going to have crapola ling times between books.
I LOOOOOOVE Mat (can't stand Rand, don't mind Perrin) although it did take me about 3 books to warm to him.
Apparently it will be split, into
3 volumes

because a) it's so long (yippee!) and b) the ghost writer didn't want to leave anything out in case it was crucial.
I am looking forward to it sooooooooo much - have converted DH2B to the dark side and plan to start my own re-read in preparation for November very very soon.
I still have the second half of book 11 to read. I can't read it until book 12 is out. If I finish it I will want book 12 NOW and will be very cross at having to wait.

I did hear that but then heard they weren't after all.
Hope they don't split it
You do know that Tor Books are now saying the 'last' book is going to be 'multi-volumes', ie the one coming out in November is STILL not going to be the end? Not surprised, but still grrr...
and she's skinny and looks like a boy.

She is my bloody wife.
(and she looks about 12, dammit!)
Rand is too. I find Perrin a bit dull with the Faile stuff. You know the 'oh she smells jealous. She's being awful but I musn't be nasty or shout because she's a girl' type crap. He suffers in comparison cos right now Matt is rescuing some damane and the Daughter of the Nine Moons (a.k.a his Bloody Wife). My Dad and DH prefer Perrin though, I'm just a hopeless Mat lover.

Perrin isn't boring, he's lovely. Matt
is more exciting though, once he's got over a book and a half of moaning/whinging and being possessed.
Rand is boring.
Well, maybe he didn't know. I'll give you that.
Apparently he has left detailed notes and dictated onto to tape a lot more stuff I think we will learn more about the aelfinn and eelfinn. There is the theory isn't there that matt and tom save moiraine from them and snakes and foxes is based on them.
I'm just finishing Winter's Heart. Love it. Lots of Mat and no boring Perrin.
I didn't think he knew he was going to die (or no more than all of us are going to die sometime) when he wrote the prequels.
I think someone (a ghost encyclopaedia-writer) should take all his notes and give them to us in a useful form. There's sure to be stuff that's not explained even in the last book. I want to know more about the aelfinn and the eelfinn.
Not really

I do feel it was a little inconsiderate to waste time on prequels and wotnot

rather than finishing the series when he was going to die like that but I'm really enjoying the series as haven't re-read in about 5 years.
My mai worry is that the ghost writer won't be any good. I really just want to know how it ends.
Ramble ramble ramble....
Had-to-go-and-die-on-us-mutter-mutter-grumble-grumble...
Like that you mean?

Anyone? I want to be able to ramble on about the fab-ness of Wheel of Time.
Thats it really. I am. I'm currently rereading the series (for about the 5th time) and had forgotten how good they are.
