I think I may be slightly in love

Couldn't put it down, off to waterstones tomorrow to get the next ones, tell me i'm no the only one

Haven't read a book in ages that has kept me that interested, even DH said that must be good, I was still reading whilst stirring the soup grin

BTW I am 32, have 2 Dc's and, previous to reading this saga, thought I was a fairly sensible person.
I am now Infatuated with a ficitonal, teenage vampire.
I have
* downloaded Edward wallpaper for my laptop;
* ordered cast photos from ebay;
* recreated the bracelet that Bella has (later on!);
* am contemplating purchasing Twilight clothing blush;
* have joined <whispers> another chat forum called 'TwilightMoms'.

In short, my life as I knew it has ended!!

Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By EdwardCullenCanHaveMySoul on Sun 05-Oct-08 10:21:32
Only if you do not value your sanity highly grin.
It's actually Teenage fiction but can certainly be appreciated by the more mature lady!
It's basically a love story between a vampire and a human - odd, I know!
The lead character, Edward, is ridiculously charismatic and you will fall in love with him regardless of the minor fact that he is fictional!
Enjoy

Am I wrong to think this is like the Kelley Armstrong books, Bitten, Stolen, etc?? Stories of Werewolves/vampires/demons/witches operating in human society?

I am off to find out about this, but am worried that in doing so I may also forfeit my soul. And I read enough nonsense fiction as it is
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By Olessaty on Sun 05-Oct-08 13:52:39
It's not "like" Kelley Armstrong, except in the general sense of it being a urban fantasy type book.

Okay so there are the supernatural people living alongside the normal people, but it's a different person's take on it.

The way the characters are written and how the story goes is completely different.

And of course, Cullen is written as such an attractive main that it's a pleasant read just for the daydreams you can have about him afterwards grin

I'm struggling to express why despite their similarities these books are completely different. Twilight evokes a feeling of being a teenager again, whereas Kelley's books are like being grown up (and hardassed).

I'm in love with Edward.

Bought the first book on Friday, should have it finished today. Would have completed it yesterday, but boring everyday life got in the way.

Saw the clip for the film and Edward is nowhere near as good looking as he is in my imagination

Everybody says that MW (That Robert Pattinson is not as good as the Edward in their heads! grin )
I'm generally quite freaked out because I didn't know this chap existed before I read the books and yet he is exactly the Edward in my head.
Weird!

I can't get the image of Robert Pattinson as Cedric (Harry Potter) out of my head. Just doesn't work as Edward.

Maybe if I hadn't seen him in HP first then he would fit the character better.
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By EdwardCullenCanHaveMySoul on Sun 05-Oct-08 18:19:35
Yes, it's difficult when you associate them with a completely different character. I have seen that Potter but can't really have concentrated blush as I had no idea it was the same person!

Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By MiaWallace on Mon 06-Oct-08 07:32:20
I imagined Bella to be plain but I think that's because of her own description of herself.

But when you consider she attracted Mike, Eric, Tyler and Edward she must be one of those people who doesn't realise she's beautiful.

love this series although i am in love with jacob.

in the first book i wnted to slap bella around a bit for being the perpetual damsel in distress, it really got to be tiring, but i still loved the first book above all.

the second book really just sets up the rest of the series and as i was reading about Jacob i was really frustrated becuase i wanted EDward so badly after the first book.

the last book was the most dissapointing for me. - no spoilers.

I just finished the last book, Breaking Dawn and I am so disappointed I thought it was so badly written and just pushed the whole premise too far. Such a shame as I really loved the first three (have posted them all to my little sister as I have finished them but may just bin charity shop this one)
Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By squilly on Sat 01-Nov-08 13:02:15
I bought the four books, cos I figured you couldn't all be wrong, and have just finished volume 3.

I think they're o.k. but to be honest, I'm not overwhelmed by them. I prefer the Kelley Armstrong books. They may be more grown up, but they have more humour, more action, less angst and girly vulnerability.

Bella ticks me off. Edward's a bit too 'holier than thou' and Jacob's a bit dim. Just my opinion and I don't expect anyone on here to agree with me.

I'm not an English teacher or a literary type, so can't say I'm a great judge of writing, but I love my sci-fi/mysteries/horror and fantasy novels and though this is a nice twist on a theme, it's not up there with the greats for me.
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By janeite on Sat 01-Nov-08 14:01:20
Okay; finished "Twilight" last night. I did think it got better, once she'd met Edward's family and once the tracker found her it was quite gripping but overall I just found it all a bit overblown and one dimensional.

In fact, I found that, as with the Harry Potter books, the writing was divided uncomfortably between "wannabe teen-talk" and "the author attempts a poetic moment" and it was a bit jarring. Also, the school-kids other than Bella and the Cullens were such cliches. What I liked best, strangely, was the development of the relationship between Bella and Charlie.

I will read the second, which dd says is better than the first - and from that will decide whether to bother buying the others.

Isn't it strange how different people can read the same books and get such different views on them?

I think that Twilight is slightly Potteresque...perfectly readable, but not nearly as inspiring or life changing as many people profess.

Perhaps I'm too old to appreciate it?!?

I find that if you read enough of the series, you eventually get into the characters and develop a mild curiosity in terms of what might come next, but you're rarely challenged or surprised by it.

Janeite, if you're vaguely interested in what happens to Bella or Edwards by the end of Breaking Dawn, I'll happily post a spoilers thread or if you cat me, I can email a summary of what happens...save you bothering with the books themselves.

I bought Twilight, having seen this thread, am nearly finished it, but I have to say am not stunned! Apart from some of the Cullens and Bella the characters aren't well drawn or even interesting, and I find Bella quite irritating. Why does she trip up all the time? Her backstory & how she finds herself in Forks is set up as a big mystery and turns out to be quite ordinary. I find the "intense" conversations between Edward and Bella a bit dull and off the point... though I do agree he sounds very sexy, physically. And I find the writing quite uneven and full of mistakes. Aaargh this is not to say I won't be getting the rest, though!!

Just to put my pedant's hat on, it's stuff like "something in my face made him realise blah blah blah" - i.e. getting the point of view totally confused - and "he... unloosened my stranglehold on his neck" - when that is clearly not what he was doing. The writing just gets in the way all the time.

OK I'll lighten up now grin.

I don't think being aimed at teens is an excuse for shoddy writing though.

*SPOILER*

And just to be really pedantic, did anyone else notice how in Breaking Dawn they never strap that child in?? I know being immortal and eveything, it's probably not necessary, but it was always 'and she was sat on my lap while we were in a porsche speeding at 100 mph' <<littlelamb steps away from the book and realises how mumsy she may have become shock>>

i don't think the writing is shoddy, just not very sophisticated to an adult reader

can't WAIT for the film

i think she writes much better than say, Jodi Picoult

Agreed Lurker: but Jodie Picoult doesn't seem to actually "write" anyway: she has one of those machines from "1984" that you just twist around to get a different setting and a couple of different character names, with a slightly different "issue" each time but the same plot!

Right, okay I am a fairly sensible 35 year old (honest), but, OMG I love these books.

I ordered the first 2 Twilight books based on reviews on here, thinking that they would be something I might like. I didn't have a chance to even look at them until DS2 woke up briefly one night after everyone had gone to bed. After giving him a cuddle, I was waiting 10 mins to see if he would drop of, so picked up the first book for "10 mins"....

In fact stayed up until 5AM and finished it. DH husband pointed out that when you get out of bed in the middle of the night you're supposed to get back into bed. blushgrin

DH husband has been informed that he is coming with me to the film.

Sad aren't I, lol. grin

Haven't read the whole thread so this may be a repeat but you can read the 'new' book written from Edwards point of view on her website.. stephaniemeyer.com.
Cant wait to see the film, although, as usual the characters all look so different to the way I had imagined them.

Although I read all the books, it was more just to see if anything really interesting happened.. the plot and writing did leave alot to be desired. The books are really not in the same league as His Dark Materials by Pullman or the Potter books. I do think that the first book will make a good film, not too complicated, lots of action and attractive characters.

Well I bitched about the standard of writing and characterisation but it wasn't bad enough to keep me away, I've just finished Breaking Dawn, I read all four on the trot.

I did enjoy them (in a way!) but I am relieved I will never again have to read the lines "I rolled my eyes" and "He wrapped his arms around my waist" which seemed to occur every 2 pages.

I am "conflicted" grin. Shelled out for all four books, scarcely took a breath between em, and will no doubt shell out for film.

For proper fans, you can actually buy ring and bracelet online from this beautifully designed website and your Edward or Jacob hoodie.

Also "snarfed" and "scarfed" in relation to food annoyed me.

Jacob any day.

I'm a bit pissed off that they've become so popular actually. I started reading them a few years ago when I bought the first one in Orlando not realising it was for teens. I wanted it to be my secret.envy

It appeals because there's sooooooo much sexual tension.

Hearing other people talking about it feels like listening to someone one talking about sleeping with my Husband - so could you please stop!grin

I am 28 with two DC's and a very happy marriage. My Husband is almost Edward Cullen, but not quite. And I think I'd sacrifice it all for just an hour as Bella! blush

Are these books likely to be of interest to a 29 year old who has never quite got over the tension of whether she prefers Angel or Spike?
