Adult fiction
: Twilight, I know I am probably way behind the times but I have just read the first one in a day and OMG
(110 messages)
i know! read the first one on tuesday went to my local waterstones on wednesday they didnt have it so drove twenty miles to next town to get it, poor baby in tow. although i have to say the second one was bit disapointing until the end, am at the start of the third one and its picking up. i was meant to be with him, i called my son Edward before i even knew about the books.
BTW I am 32, have 2 Dc's and, previous to reading this saga, thought I was a fairly sensible person. I am now Infatuated with a ficitonal, teenage vampire. I have * downloaded Edward wallpaper for my laptop; * ordered cast photos from ebay; * recreated the bracelet that Bella has (later on!); * am contemplating purchasing Twilight clothing ; * have joined <whispers> another chat forum called 'TwilightMoms'.
Only if you do not value your sanity highly . It's actually Teenage fiction but can certainly be appreciated by the more mature lady! It's basically a love story between a vampire and a human - odd, I know! The lead character, Edward, is ridiculously charismatic and you will fall in love with him regardless of the minor fact that he is fictional! Enjoy
In the last week i have read twlight and new moon, but my selfish sister went on holiday before bringing mr eclipse to read and i have to wait until next week.
Am I wrong to think this is like the Kelley Armstrong books, Bitten, Stolen, etc?? Stories of Werewolves/vampires/demons/witches operating in human society?
I am off to find out about this, but am worried that in doing so I may also forfeit my soul. And I read enough nonsense fiction as it is
It's not "like" Kelley Armstrong, except in the general sense of it being a urban fantasy type book.
Okay so there are the supernatural people living alongside the normal people, but it's a different person's take on it.
The way the characters are written and how the story goes is completely different.
And of course, Cullen is written as such an attractive main that it's a pleasant read just for the daydreams you can have about him afterwards
I'm struggling to express why despite their similarities these books are completely different. Twilight evokes a feeling of being a teenager again, whereas Kelley's books are like being grown up (and hardassed).
Everybody says that MW (That Robert Pattinson is not as good as the Edward in their heads! ) I'm generally quite freaked out because I didn't know this chap existed before I read the books and yet he is exactly the Edward in my head. Weird!
Yes, it's difficult when you associate them with a completely different character. I have seen that Potter but can't really have concentrated as I had no idea it was the same person! Speaking of which, said Potter is on tonight I think! Shall get my Pattinson fix
In my head she was quite plain but I liked the girl in the trailer
Pleasantly surprised with Edwards casting, I thought he wouldn't be anywhere near the Edward in my head (especially the eyes!) but I thought it was a good choice
love this series although i am in love with jacob.
in the first book i wnted to slap bella around a bit for being the perpetual damsel in distress, it really got to be tiring, but i still loved the first book above all.
the second book really just sets up the rest of the series and as i was reading about Jacob i was really frustrated becuase i wanted EDward so badly after the first book.
the last book was the most dissapointing for me. - no spoilers.
I blame flame for introducing me to this book.....
I am also ever-so-slightly in love with a vampire too now.
I lent my books onto a friend (flame loaned me the books, I tho needed my own copies so went and bought them), and she stated that flame and I might be needed to be the ones named in her divorce petition for introducing her to another man...........her DH is just not good enough anymore!
Just finished the 4th book last night. I loved it, definitely Edward not Jacob for me! didn't know about the film until this post and don't think I really want to know and spoil the picture in my head Makes me wish I was 17!

I randomly picked up the second book in a charity shop, is it worth reading it before I have read the first, or will it spoil it? Don't really want to spend money on the first if it's not my cup of tea. Also have nothing appealing to me on my book shelf atm.
I read anything and everything - my list of all time faves are The Collector - John Fowles His Dark materials = Phillip Pullman Great Gatsby Robin Hobb Farseer load.
Robin Hobb farseer is v.good, still waiting for the new GRR Martin though and have been for ages it seems. Edward for me too, Bella is ok but seriously Renesme?? i couldnt even read the name quickly it just sort of stuck there so the flow wasnt that good. I have to say though i got a bit bored at the 2nd or 3rd book but persevered and it was good but not as fantastic as the first book had led me to expect it was going to be. The host seems quite good, would be interested to know if anyone has read that yet?
You and me both EdwardCullenCanHaveMySoul! I had no idea who Robert Pattinson was before casting, and he is EXACTLY the Edward of my dreams. I had no idea that these were teen books either when I read the first two books about 3 or 4 years ago. I LOVE them, and have read them now more times than I could count. I still just love Edward more and more ever time (and believe me I didn't think it even possible )
Host is good Flame I agree. Can't wait to see what she does next..... I have read the first 12 chapters of midnight Sun too, and loved it. It really fills in the gaps. Hope she does actually finish it someday. *crosses fingers, toes, legs etc etc*
Hmmm, having read this thread am now pondering making a purchase.
I seem to have a thing for bad American telly shows and their supporting books. Since I have now passed through my Buffy, Roswell and Moonlight obsession perhaps I have space for a new kid on the block.... It would be following through with my previous vampire theme.
I know, I know. I'm sorry! It drives people mad because I can never turn my English teacher head off and just get lost in the story. I do try, honest gov!
I just finished the last book, Breaking Dawn and I am so disappointed I thought it was so badly written and just pushed the whole premise too far. Such a shame as I really loved the first three (have posted them all to my little sister as I have finished them but may just bin charity shop this one)
I bought the four books, cos I figured you couldn't all be wrong, and have just finished volume 3.
I think they're o.k. but to be honest, I'm not overwhelmed by them. I prefer the Kelley Armstrong books. They may be more grown up, but they have more humour, more action, less angst and girly vulnerability.
Bella ticks me off. Edward's a bit too 'holier than thou' and Jacob's a bit dim. Just my opinion and I don't expect anyone on here to agree with me.
I'm not an English teacher or a literary type, so can't say I'm a great judge of writing, but I love my sci-fi/mysteries/horror and fantasy novels and though this is a nice twist on a theme, it's not up there with the greats for me.
Okay; finished "Twilight" last night. I did think it got better, once she'd met Edward's family and once the tracker found her it was quite gripping but overall I just found it all a bit overblown and one dimensional.
In fact, I found that, as with the Harry Potter books, the writing was divided uncomfortably between "wannabe teen-talk" and "the author attempts a poetic moment" and it was a bit jarring. Also, the school-kids other than Bella and the Cullens were such cliches. What I liked best, strangely, was the development of the relationship between Bella and Charlie.
I will read the second, which dd says is better than the first - and from that will decide whether to bother buying the others.
the constant rescuing of bella in the first book made me quite dislike her actually, and was v. mills n boon esq where the female protagonist is rescued by the nale and romance ensues....but fuck up after fuck up - i wanted to slap her.
edward is a sap, Bella is sappier (really they deserve each other) Jacob, on the other hand is great - funny and witty and Bella needs to wake up to this!
Read them all - think i rushed the last one because I was so excited, so will re-read later.
Okay - finshed the second one, teeth gritted in boredom throughout, this morning. I am now marking Yr 11 coursework again, and, dare I say, it is more interesting! I like Jake but Bella is infuriating and most of the writing is so DULL; I find that I've read five pages and either nothing has happened apart from Bella wittering on or something might have happened but I neither know nor care what. Don't think I'll bother with the 3rd.
Custardo - you are being very cagey indeed; I can't work oput what you mean!
I just picked up the first book 'twilight' yesterday, I began it at tea time today and I'm currently on page 310! I think by next week I will have read the whole series.
I love Kelly armstrong's books too, but Stephenie Meyers is in a different league, her plot and characterisation is far more developed and intriguing.
Isn't it strange how different people can read the same books and get such different views on them?
I think that Twilight is slightly Potteresque...perfectly readable, but not nearly as inspiring or life changing as many people profess.
Perhaps I'm too old to appreciate it?!?
I find that if you read enough of the series, you eventually get into the characters and develop a mild curiosity in terms of what might come next, but you're rarely challenged or surprised by it.
Janeite, if you're vaguely interested in what happens to Bella or Edwards by the end of Breaking Dawn, I'll happily post a spoilers thread or if you cat me, I can email a summary of what happens...save you bothering with the books themselves.
Lol Squilly. Yes, I said earlier down the thread that it reminded me of Harry Potter, and not in a good way!
I am ordering the third one for dd for Christmas; she said the first two were okay and that she'd like to carry on reading them so I'll hold out on the spoilers for now, in case I'm tempted to let them slip to her, thanks!
O Custardo I am so with you! I wanted to throw Breaking Dawn across the room. I read most of it while bfing ds to sleep, and he really likes to try to grasp the pages. Normally I stop him, but with this book I thought, nah, you go for it boy Team Jacob all the way
I bought Twilight, having seen this thread, am nearly finished it, but I have to say am not stunned! Apart from some of the Cullens and Bella the characters aren't well drawn or even interesting, and I find Bella quite irritating. Why does she trip up all the time? Her backstory & how she finds herself in Forks is set up as a big mystery and turns out to be quite ordinary. I find the "intense" conversations between Edward and Bella a bit dull and off the point... though I do agree he sounds very sexy, physically. And I find the writing quite uneven and full of mistakes. Aaargh this is not to say I won't be getting the rest, though!!
Just to put my pedant's hat on, it's stuff like "something in my face made him realise blah blah blah" - i.e. getting the point of view totally confused - and "he... unloosened my stranglehold on his neck" - when that is clearly not what he was doing. The writing just gets in the way all the time.
And just to be really pedantic, did anyone else notice how in Breaking Dawn they never strap that child in?? I know being immortal and eveything, it's probably not necessary, but it was always 'and she was sat on my lap while we were in a porsche speeding at 100 mph' <<littlelamb steps away from the book and realises how mumsy she may have become >>
Agreed Lurker: but Jodie Picoult doesn't seem to actually "write" anyway: she has one of those machines from "1984" that you just twist around to get a different setting and a couple of different character names, with a slightly different "issue" each time but the same plot!
Right, okay I am a fairly sensible 35 year old (honest), but, OMG I love these books.
I ordered the first 2 Twilight books based on reviews on here, thinking that they would be something I might like. I didn't have a chance to even look at them until DS2 woke up briefly one night after everyone had gone to bed. After giving him a cuddle, I was waiting 10 mins to see if he would drop of, so picked up the first book for "10 mins"....
In fact stayed up until 5AM and finished it. DH husband pointed out that when you get out of bed in the middle of the night you're supposed to get back into bed.
DH husband has been informed that he is coming with me to the film.
Haven't read the whole thread so this may be a repeat but you can read the 'new' book written from Edwards point of view on her website.. stephaniemeyer.com. Cant wait to see the film, although, as usual the characters all look so different to the way I had imagined them.
Although I read all the books, it was more just to see if anything really interesting happened.. the plot and writing did leave alot to be desired. The books are really not in the same league as His Dark Materials by Pullman or the Potter books. I do think that the first book will make a good film, not too complicated, lots of action and attractive characters.
Well I bitched about the standard of writing and characterisation but it wasn't bad enough to keep me away, I've just finished Breaking Dawn, I read all four on the trot.
I did enjoy them (in a way!) but I am relieved I will never again have to read the lines "I rolled my eyes" and "He wrapped his arms around my waist" which seemed to occur every 2 pages.
I am "conflicted" . Shelled out for all four books, scarcely took a breath between em, and will no doubt shell out for film.
For proper fans, you can actually buy ring and bracelet online from this beautifully designed website and your Edward or Jacob hoodie.
I'm a bit pissed off that they've become so popular actually. I started reading them a few years ago when I bought the first one in Orlando not realising it was for teens. I wanted it to be my secret.
It appeals because there's sooooooo much sexual tension.
Hearing other people talking about it feels like listening to someone one talking about sleeping with my Husband - so could you please stop!
I am 28 with two DC's and a very happy marriage. My Husband is almost Edward Cullen, but not quite. And I think I'd sacrifice it all for just an hour as Bella!
