I read a post here earlier saying it was good.

Is it worth a read? What did you think of it?

DifferenceEngine Wed 20-Nov-13 22:31:17

Yes yes yes yes

It will change your outlook on life

- so a bit of a meh from me there

Like all humour , it is real marmite !

I loved it - and love Douglas Adam's sense of the absurd.

Classic book. One you should read.

TotallyAddictedToLurking Wed 20-Nov-13 22:37:47

I have now bought it for my Kindle.

I love how instantly I can buy books. My purse does not though!!

One of my fave all-time books, just because it was like nothing I'd ever read before when I was 14/15 (?).

Very quirky, incredibly witty at times and just a joy to read. Douglas Adams had my sense of humour, to a T smile

I need to re-read it. Will I love it now as much as I did 30y ago?

(shock how the hell can it be 30y since I read THGTTG? I remember it so vividly!)

Oh I love it. I've read it so many times that I can quote it all! grin

the film the other year? - shit shit shit crap shit shit crap.

An abomination.

MurderOfGelth Thu 21-Nov-13 18:32:02

It's my most read book, lost count of how many times I've read it

BobaFetaCheese Thu 21-Nov-13 18:35:24

It's amazing!
Although I dislike So Long & thanks for all the fish, just didn't flow as well as the others for me!

LineRunner Thu 21-Nov-13 18:37:02

Book great.

Film shit.

TotallyAddictedToLurking Thu 21-Nov-13 19:21:24

Looking at amazon I realise there are five books.

Are they all worth reading?

MurderOfGelth Thu 21-Nov-13 19:26:36

Oh yes, definitely. First two are my favourites, but the others are good too.

Thingymajigs Thu 21-Nov-13 19:39:05

I'm currently reading the series to my 10 yo ds who isn't a very confident reader. It's a great book but an awful one to try to read aloud I've discovered. I'm quite surprised at how insightful some of the humour is and it still feels fresh and relevant. We're on book 3 and plan on reading them all.

LittleTulip Thu 21-Nov-13 19:44:16

Agree with Line.

Read the book but don't bother with the film!

ElleBellyBeeblebrox Thu 21-Nov-13 20:03:16

Yep the book is amazing, hilarious, clever. The film was very disappointing. It sucked.

MurderOfGelth Thu 21-Nov-13 22:11:55

Book = excellent
Radio show = excellent
TV show = excellent
Film = big pile of poo

tribpot Thu 21-Nov-13 22:17:19

Read them - insanely brilliant.

Shoutymomma Thu 21-Nov-13 22:23:11

Books are brilliant. Get audio copies of the radio show for in the car - awesome. I hated the tv show myself.

The Book People have Douglas Adams' 8 books in a set for £8.99 at the moment. Last week it was in the flash sale for £5.99

CosmicDespot Thu 21-Nov-13 22:31:03

Love it! Fabulous book.

MaxineQuordlepleen Thu 21-Nov-13 22:34:45

My favourite book ever. And I liked the film...

ErrolTheDragon Thu 21-Nov-13 22:38:45

Oh, I somehow hadn't realised you could get copies of the radio - I'd like to hear The Voice of the Book again. Anyone else old enough to have heard the original broadcasts?

Radio -superlative; books - started excellent but while stretching the trilogy to 4 was good, I didn't really like the last one much, esp the ending. TV - so-so (they could probably have done it well nowadays with cgi, zaphod was never going to work well back then). Haven't seen the film - it's that bad, is it?

MurderOfGelth Thu 21-Nov-13 22:58:44

Errol Everyone I know walked out of the film sounding like Marvin on an especially bad day, so yes, it's bad grin

The film was so bad it actually made me angry. grin

It's the most dreadful thing ever done to a book since they butchered the James Herriot books to make All Creatures Great And Small.
