Somebody could've warned me....

DisneyDiva87 Sun 15-Sep-13 16:29:02

Not at all but at least you have something to look forward to

Oh nononono, that argument does NOT make it better.
I don't do deferred gratification v well... grin

He wrote the first book in 1996 and is still not done?

<humph>

Thrustbadger Sun 15-Sep-13 16:40:42

He's really old as well so he might die before he finishes it!

shock

Oh you bad, bad badger, Thrustbadger - don't even think that. I will die of Acute Uncompleted Plotline Dissatisfaction sad

tries really had not to mention badger culls as in bad taste, but fails

Don't worry, you've still got Dunk and Egg to read.

I did my time waiting for Harry Potter to end, never thought I'd be in the same position again with another series!

RatHammock Sun 15-Sep-13 16:50:41

Winter is coming.

What are Dunk and Egg please?

Isn't there one coming out this year? Its 7 books in total isn't it? ( not counting the weird split up books) and the last book is 2015. That's what I read anyway.
No spoilers please - I'm only half way through book 4!

It's actually progress if they're saying 2015!

I know it's infuriating. I'm surprised no one has pulled a Misery on GRRM yet.

MarianneEnjolras Sun 15-Sep-13 16:54:56

It's a mini series about Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon (Maester Aemon's little brother).

They can be found in these books:

The Hedge Knight

The Sworn Sword

The Mystery Knight

Ah. I think my source may have been Wikipedia thinking about it! blush

Nonono, I don't want to read about even more frigging characters -
I want to know How It All Ends.

You know, traditional storytelling: beginning, middle, and crucially, END.

There is an Amazon review who said they feel it's turned into a soap opera, just goes on and on without anything coming to any kind of conclusion.

What is 'pulling a Misery'? <interested>

Ah see, wrt HP, I waited until they were all out and then read the whole lot back to back <weirdo>

I've been on the GoT wiki - but they don't know more either; how would they, I know, but I need my fix.

And the TV series is just... well, okish, I suppose. I've only just seen the first 2 episodes, admittedly.

Maybe I should start on Terry Pratchett's Discworld series in the meantime? Which one first or is there a chronological order?

And is there an End, hm??

MarianneEnjolras Sun 15-Sep-13 17:07:15

All the different characters is what I like best about it. I like epic stories with a really detailed back story.

As far as I know from the ASOIAF forums, there is no expected due date for the next book, however there are a couple of chapters that have been released which you can find on the web.

Part of me doesn't want the next book to come out because the few of my favourite characters that aren't already dead will probably get killed!

MarianneEnjolras Sun 15-Sep-13 17:08:26

Colour of Magic is first in the Discworld, and they are still being written too I think... but there are hundreds of them to get through.

SilverApples Sun 15-Sep-13 17:11:53

Love Discworld, fantastic storytelling!
I'd start with Wyrd Sisters
Or Guards Guards.

sleepyhead Sun 15-Sep-13 17:14:50

I just think how much better off I am than those poor sods who read the first one in 1996 shock

At least I got a run at 5 in a row.

But yes, bloody GRRM. Neil Gaiman wrote a v good blog article about our wish to lock GRRM in a room until he'd finished writing GOT called "George RR Martin Is Not Your Bitch" grin

WayHarshTai Sun 15-Sep-13 17:15:03

Read discworld in groups and chronologically. So read all the Witches, then all the Death, all the Watch and so on, group by group.

Ok then, Discworld will be my methadone then grin
Sorry, more bad taste, I'll stop, honest.

Yes, I like the detailed backstories too, I think the lack of detail in the TV series is what makes it a bit 'flat' for me. Well, and the fact that I know what's going to happen next of course.

I am going to look up that blog, thanks.

RatHammock Sun 15-Sep-13 17:25:24

Thanks Marianne, I'll look them up. I also just finished GOT without realising the series wasn't finished and am bereft.

Does anyone else really want Tyrion to find a lovely girl and live happily ever after? Maybe he could get together with Brienne?

Lovecat Sun 15-Sep-13 17:36:05

Yes. It is bloody frustrating. I have read The Hedge Knight, didn't realise he'd written some more of those (though I wish he'd stop doing backstories and ancient history and get on with the main story).

I reckon Tyrion's going to end up with Danaerys =D

I read all 5 in one go and am now re-reading them as, having finally got around to watching the tv show, I totally didn't realise that Renly was gay... so I'm re-reading to see if that's actually a thing in the books or just something they decided to do for the sake of the telly!?

GillyBillyWilly Sun 15-Sep-13 17:37:16

It makes me excited to know he's still got more to write/imagine/decide smile

helterskelter99 Sun 15-Sep-13 17:38:14

I actually warn people whenever I recommend them as it gave me the rage too lol

Renly is gay in the books. It's subtle but it's there.

And Brienne should end up with Jaime, not Tyrion. I'm afraid that by the end of ADWD I was not a big Tyrion fan at all.

Everything Stannis does just makes me love him more though!
