Jack Caffrey <swoon>

And good old cheap beer drinking, football loving, curry eating Tom Thorne.

Who's your favourite? And if I like those two, what else might I enjoy?

I can't remember his name, but the one in the Kate Atkins books. One was on tv a few months ago and the actor looked right. Vulnerable bit of rough, that's my bag.

Jackson Brodie, Angel

played to great effect by Jason Issacs

Albert Campion. Could read those books over and over. (although I've always fancied myself being a toff japing around a stately home with a natty red roadster outside. What larks!)

Lord Peter Wimsey
Adam Dalgleish
Rebus

Precious Ramotswe. The Ladies' Detective Agency books are an absolute pleasure to read.

Sherlock Holmes. Elementary, my dear.

Roy grace for me

Sherlock Holmes, sure, but only if he looks like either Benedict Cumberbatch or Jonny Lee Miller.

Benedict C looks creepy imho - totally not my idea of SH. I don't know who JLM is.

Gotto love Rebus. Baggy eyed, raspy whisky voice, bit smelly. Yum.

Poirot or Morse

Miss Marple (when Joan Hickson played her!) and Wexford!

Charles Paris: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Brett#Charles_Paris.

He's an actor, either small parts or out of work. Interesting "insights" into the world of acting. wink

Simon Brett has written books about another character, known only as Mrs Pargeter, whose deceased husband seems to have been some sort of criminal mastermind.

And then, of course, there's Police Constable Peter Grant in Ben Aaronovitch's "Rivers of London" series.

GerardButlersSecretLover Fri 13-Sep-13 20:44:22

Oh and Morse and Lewis!!!

Miss Marple. Hands down.

Sergeant Cuff from The Moonstone. The original (pretty much) and best.

But as far as tv goes, the Joan Hickson Miss Marple. Totally convincing as both quiet old lady and shit-hot detective.

Tommy & Tuppence
Hercule Poirot
Ariadne Oliver
Mr Parker Pyne

Anyone sensing a pattern here?

MrsOakenshield Fri 13-Sep-13 20:47:42

Lord Peter Wimsey, without a doubt.

Thurlow what about Robert Downey Junior?

DH and I love watching "Elementary"

Hadmeathello Fri 13-Sep-13 20:50:54

Harry Bosch for me.

Anyone remember when Mr Big from SATC was on the very first
Law & Order? Chris Noth I think. He was a brilliant TV detective and I adored that show at the time...

teacherwith2kids Fri 13-Sep-13 20:51:03

Lord Peter Wimsey.

Though Thursday Next is gaining ground (I don't do TV, particularly, so can't comment on screen versions of any of these - actually, ARE there any screen versions of LPW?)
