CQuin, thank you for the Into The Darkest Corner recommendation - I've just finished it and thought it was very, very good. Couldn't put it down!

RumBaaBaa Mon 03-Dec-12 21:12:56

avon my DH has rather ruined it for me by referring to it as 'Mudflaps' hmm. Has taken away some of the magic somewhat.

Hmm what else... Mums List by John Greene? Shantaram? Or some William Boyd?

CQuin Mon 03-Dec-12 21:04:50

Agree. V ££

I heard someone talking about tricks I learnt from dead men which sounds really good, thats quite new I think so I am waiting for a price drop.

AvonCallingBarksdale Mon 03-Dec-12 18:39:35

CQuin, I haven't read Darkest Corner, but just looked at a synopsis, and that looks good.
RumBaaBaa, YEs, I've read Mudbound, that was excellent.
Never heard of the HArold Fry book, so I'll have a look there. Likewise with the 100 Year Old Man.
I am writing myself a list now!
Thanks

Gillian Flynn who did Gone Girl did Dark Places too- that is really gripping.

My Dear I Wanted To Tell You is FAB- I loved it.

Virgil Mon 03-Dec-12 18:33:11

The 100 year old man who claimed out of the window and disappeared is great. Before I go to sleep was quite good but I read 100 year old man straight afterwards and enjoyed it much much more. Its a fabulous book.

CQuin Mon 03-Dec-12 18:30:53

also the 1oo year old man- also ace
abd where did ya go Bernadette
LOVED

hippoCritt Mon 03-Dec-12 18:26:57

I was going to say the unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry, took a w hole to get into but I am so glad I persevered, I'd put it in same catergory as me before you, I loved that book, took me ages to move to another one it just stayed with me.

CQuin Mon 03-Dec-12 18:22:45

what about Harold fry - not a thriller but good. The blackhouse is ace and part of a trilogy

Gone girl is GRIPPING with a shit ending

defending jacob is a great legal thriller

RumBaaBaa Mon 03-Dec-12 18:22:16

A totally different kind of book, I am reading Mudbound by Hillary Jordan and loving it. Thought I'd mention it because I recently read Before I Go to Sleep too and your thread caught my eye.

Broodzilla Mon 03-Dec-12 18:21:01

Gone girl? Or has everyone else already read it?

CQuin Mon 03-Dec-12 18:20:11

god NO to wallflower it is shit/

wife 44 is ok ( and similarly lite)
Dorothy koomson was my " stuck in a holiday home with a broken kindle" thing - was shite

suppose you have done darkest corner?

AvonCallingBarksdale Mon 03-Dec-12 18:18:34

oooh, great, thank you, lots of suggestions here to keep me busy. Thanks!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Mon 03-Dec-12 17:59:50

Sj Watson wrote BIGTS.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Mon 03-Dec-12 17:59:16

Jojo moyes wrote me before you. She has another book out.

The perks of being a wallflower - Stephen chbosky

highlandcoo Mon 03-Dec-12 17:54:49

Meant to add, if you enjoyed BIGTS you could try Sophie Hannah's books; she writes in a similar style. Little Face and Hurting Distance, although the latter is pretty dark.

highlandcoo Mon 03-Dec-12 17:51:44

I thought My Dear IWTTY was excellent. The love story was beautifully portrayed and the description of the early days of reconstructive surgery, although graphic, were really interesting.
I hesitated to read it initially because it looked like chick-lit from the cover - which I don't generally enjoy - however it was a well-written and absorbing book. Would make an excellent film.
If you liked Atonement I think you would enjoy it.

I too have recently read Me Before You and Before I go to Sleep...
I'm now reading:
- You had me at Hello by Mhairi McFarlane- seems good, and gets good ratings on Amazon.

Haven't read the other one you suggested... Have you read any Nevil Shute? A shameless plug for my favourite author. If you like a good novel and haven't read A Town Called Alice, I'd recommend it.

hillyhilly Mon 03-Dec-12 17:33:40

I just finished "my dear I meant to tell you", I enjoyed it though it wasn't gripping I didn't think.
I loved "into the darkest corner" very dark and scary but the best book I've read for a long while.

Gumby Mon 03-Dec-12 17:32:34

Before I go to Sleep?

Gumby Mon 03-Dec-12 17:32:03

Who wrote me before you & the other one you mention?

Gumby Mon 03-Dec-12 17:31:25

Have you read any Dorothy koomson? The ice cream girls is my fave - very dark & gripping

AvonCallingBarksdale Mon 03-Dec-12 17:24:58

I loved BIGTS and before that I read and loved, loved, loved Me Before You. I've also recently read the David Nicholls books. What should I read next (authors I like usually are Jonathan Coe, Ian McEwan, Emma Donaghue, Donna Tartt).
Is My Dear I Meant To Tell You (think that's what its called), any good?

TIA
