Has anyone else re read twilight after reading 50 shades and found they're opinion of Edward has changed? I used to love the first bit of twilight as a lovely romance as they fall for each other. I'm on the part where he goes to rescue bella from getting beat up when she goes dress shopping. And all i can see now is how dominating and strict Edward is! And he is! I can see where EL James got her ideas now. I never saw this side of Edward before. Now i can't get it outta my head. I feel twilight will forever be spoiled for me now
still good but very different. Anyone else feel the same?
You see, I have a nearly 12-yo who so far has shown no interest in reading the Twilight series, but I have told her that if she does, I will read them too and will want to talk to her about the nature of real male/female relationships.
At the moment she's reading LOTR, which with hindsight is very male dominated - but at least it has Eowyn.
Hmmm, am I perhaps taking this too seriously???
I know tigggy this is what teenage girls think love looks like.
NO!!!
When he told her he watched her sleeping I thought what a creep. But Bella just 'gasped' and accepted it. V odd.
But I guess that's what a relationship with a vampire looks like!
Honestly hellobear, it's like reading a different book this time round. He is such a bully. Just got to the bit when she first goes to his home and he scares her on purpose by flinging her across the room and restraining her. Then he laughs. The humiliates her be keeping her restrained infront of Alice! Deary me. And this is suposed to be a good read for teenage girls?
So glad others see what a twonk Edward is. I only just joined the Twilight bandwagon and am appalled that none of my friends see what a controlling, abusive relationship it is! I KNOW it's nit real but still.
Love the Buffy version.
no, but then i read 50 shades first... i've studiously ignored the existence of twilight until the last 2 weeks when i needed something to read and i was bought the books second hand.
i'm loving them, and the films and am so used to reading/writing fanfic for other genres as a hobby that i can enjoy the twilight books without my 50 shades of drab experience affecting my enjoyment.
not read 50 shades as...it sounds shyte tbh
but on my first reading of twilight i found edwards behaviour weird and not very romantic at all really, and bella's reaction puh-theh-tic!
Ha ha schro. Yeah the name kinda gives it away. Will look at that link. I'm a sometimes fan of the marquis de sade so i'm pretty difficult to shock. But i'm surprised by how different i now feel about edward. Hmmm.
Yes, I was a bit
when a friend said she wanted to be Anastasia Grey. The threatening, controlling relationship side of the plot goes over the heads of many people (including EL James?).
I was the same as OP when I first started reading Twilight, but it got me thinking, and by the end of the series, I had sussed out Edward.
I wanted Ana (50 shades) to see sense and go back to Jose.
<reminds self is not real>
I found Bella and Edward's relationship very disturbing before I read 50 Shades.
Although neither were as disturbing as the colleague who insisted that Christian Gray is her ideal man
Found it hilarious when he tried to explain what a spreader bar is though, surely the clue is in the name?
Yeah, I borrowed the first one from my fairly prudish SIL. MIL has read it too, I will never look at either of them the same again.
Arf @ "hymen".
I normally read BDSM library, so the sex scenes seemed really boring.
I LOVE the sooky novels and true blood too. Brilliant. Never read anne rice, but i reckon it's better written and much darker stuff.
Schro. I read that as hymen!!!!!!!
lol yeah i thought 50 was a bit vanilla. It's nowt when you've read somat like american psycho (my mind will be forever warped) It was really funny how all my mates were sooo shocked at it!
If you like easy-reading vampire stuff there is no shortage around! but have you read any of the Sookie Stackhouse ones?

Have just finished the 50 shades books and actually really enjoyed them, found them far more vanilla than I thought they would be but yes, you are sadly right.
I knew they were originally Twilight fan fiction though so I guess I spoiled it for myself by reading them.
Quite badly written though. I haven't been able to take them as serious as Twilight and I swear the next time I see a hyphen I may scream.
Oh no gobbler. I am of the crowd who enjoyed 50 shades and the da vinci code
but i don't expect intelligent writing, just an entertaining easy read. When your trying to decipher beowulf from old english, you need some light relief
And don't forget he keeps glamouring her to soften her up and bend her to his will!
Bella couldn't be glamoured due to her special power. <saddo alert>
Got sent this link a while back

Well erm
lol. To be honest, i really enjoyed em first read as a summer beach easy read. I like romance, excitment and vampires. Since the new films out soon, i figured i'd re read along side a hard going novel as some light relief. But all i can see now is a dominating aggressive male which has kinda spoilt it for me. Any other suggestions?

Nope, I always saw it for the twishite that it is. If it helps more people realise it then dammit maybe 50 Shades does have a purpose after all.
<ponders the cleverness of the universe>
I'm with LadyMargo here. reread Twilight?
That's on a par with storing open wine imo
i had never looked at it like that before.
