This is the new home of this thread which has now died as none of the active particpants want to operate behind the new local barrier.
For any newbies - we are meeting usually on the last monday of each month (plus or minus a week depending on other things going on). The dates of our next 2 meetings were fixed last time we met but I am not 100% sure of them, hopefully one of the others will be along in a moment to confirm them. Venues are variable and we take it in turns whether they are north or south of the river so everyone has occasions when the meeting is nearer to them.
We are deciding the books 2 months in advance to give ourselves plenty of time to find a copy and read it. We decide which book to schedule by concensus at the end of each meeting - anyone can suggest one.
Our next meeting will be at the end of November and we are reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K Dick
The next meeting (which will be in mid January) will be looking at "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman.
Brill, that new local site is appalling, I can't be bothered to try and work it out. Hope to see you all in January.
Thank-you, fangirl, for setting this up. I too am not that enamoured by the new local. I can't get past the needing a new nn - it took me long enough to come up with the one I have!!
I may think of one eventually, but, if it takes me as long as it did before, the book group will have grown up and gone away to university by then...
Don't forget to put this thread in "Watching" so that you can find it again easily
Apologies for any confusion by me saying end of November above - The next meeting is Monday Dec 3rd at The Social, 130 Cheltenham Road - just north of Stokes Croft.
So how many of us are going to be there tomorrow? No Lamazeroo, no Spero - I haven't seen Bookwormthatturned on this thread, does she know about it?
I should be there. Intending to use the bus, god help me. I've even managed to finish reading the book this time.
I have pm'd bookwormthatturned the link to this thread but I never had a reply.
Hi,
thanks xkcdfangirl and exexpat for pointing me to the new thread. RL has been a little eventful lately so I've been offline for a while but am fully intending to be there tomorrow
.
See you there everyone,
Good! See you tomorrow.
I've finished the book!!!
3o'clock in the morning, I couldn't get back to sleep... A good use of my thumb-twiddling time
Newbie here - is it possible to join the group still? Not for today, obviously, but for January?
fozmeadows - I'm sure you'd be very welcome. There are usually 4-6 of us, so plenty of room for more. We've picked the book for January (see above) but not the venue yet, so watch this space...
(and I'm sure if you wanted to pop along this evening to size us up say hello, you'd be very welcome, even if you haven't read the book)
Thanks! I look forward to joining you in January
sorry guys - I don't know if you're going to see this - but I'm ducking out. I've had a hell of a few days and no sleep last night and now I'm so tired I feel drunk and forming a sentence is difficult enough to have me in tears (no I haven't had a drop). I set out to get to the meeting but turned back when I realised I wasn't really safe to be out of the house in my current state. Early night instead and see you soon.
So sorry not to see you tonight.
I am on my way, just having difficulty parking
I'm here - all on my own so far... Sorry to hear you're not feeling up to it, xkcd - hope things have calmed down in time for the Christmas do on Saturday.
Also, just wanted to say: am extremely reassured to find that I'm not the only xkcd/webcomics fan on the boards!
The book I was recommending tonight for February for you is The Death of Bees by Lisa O'Donnell. I haven't read it myself but I have it on good recommendation that it is excellent.
Cheeses, Abigail, you're on the ball!
I'll be taking a look just as soon as auto correct has to stop auto correcting for me...
Hehe I was a bit. Thought I'd better do it while I remember! Memory of a goldfish and all!
Hope you aren't too hung over this morning
Who me?
<looks around to find a clock>
What time is it?
Not sure if anyone is likely to check here, but we accidentally have an extra copy of January's book. The conversation went something like this:
Me: Ooh this parcel isn't a christmas present, it's for me to have now - my bookclub book for January
Him: Oh b****r I ordered that for you to be a Christmas present.
If there are no takers I will think of a random member of our extended family to have an extra prezzy but if anyone out there hasn't got hold of it yet and would like to mitigate this miscommunication then let me know.
Hello everyone! Found you (thanks xkcd for the PM). Happy new year from sunny, sunny Oz. I'm well under way with The Magicians, which is enjoyable and thought-provoking. Are we still meeting Monday week? Gosh, that seems so soon, and here I am sitting round in 40C while my baby plays in the garden under the sprinklers. We're both in for a shock!
Do we have a venue? And a book for February? Will be nice for me to have things to look forward to to stop me dissolving into a puddle of jetlagged homesickness.
