I know I've been hogging the boards the last few days, but I don't care :P Just been curious on other peoples opinions on things.

I didn't know where to put this, so I apologise if it's in the wrong category.

I was wondering what everyones favourite Urban Legend/Cautionary Tale was. I have been fascinated in them for pretty much forever, due to so many meanings and of course expressing the nations fears.

So what are your favourites? Feel free to share the UL with us! smile

Oh, I'll give that one a miss then. Thanks for the heads up!

I was talking to DH about the thread and he reminded me of an excellent story I'd forgotten all about. Reece Sheersmith posted it on Twitter a while ago (follow him if you like spooky stuff, avoid like the plague if you don't).

So, a woodsman was on his way home one night when he realised he had taken a wrong turn and was in a part of the forest he had never seen before. He wasn't worried, being experienced in the ways of the woods, and decided to find shelter for the night and find his way home in the morning.
Darkness had just fallen when to his delight he saw in a small clearing a wooden shack. The door opened easily and the woodsman was glad to see a bed in the dark room.
As the man settled for the night and his eyes adjusted to the dark he noticed that all around the walls of the cabin were a series of portraits showing people with the most fearsome expressions of hatred and violence on their faces.
The paintings all seemed to be glaring down at the woodsman on the bed, and it was only when the fatigue of his day overcame him was he able to finally fall asleep.
In the morning, the woodsman awoke blinking in surprise as sunlight flooded the cabin. He realised that he had been mistaken the night before. The were no pictures on the walls of the cabin.
Only windows.

What is his twitter name? I can't find him on there.

Something I have been wondering all through this thread - are the slender man and stick man the same legend?

Perplexed! shock That has shit me up a treat!

I'm unclear about the slender/stick man.But the slender man sounds creepy and menacing and in my head lollops and looms. Stick man is a cartoon stick man in my head- but he is spindly and much faster. Like a spider. This is only in my head though.

<avoids looking out of windows at all costs as it is dark and late and I can hear noises whick may be foxes but are probably an army of killer clowns/stick men/ slender men/ escaped lunatics and Japanese toilet ghosts>

Very bad grammar in that post. This is what happens when you get The Fear.

Some of those Slender Man photos... If I was that close to one then taking a photo would be the last thing I would be doing! sad

HarlettOScara Fri 24-Aug-12 16:07:09

Most of this slender man photos are photoshopped, no?

EauRouge Fri 24-Aug-12 16:09:19

No, ALL of them are photoshopped because it's not real wink

HarlettOScara Fri 24-Aug-12 16:56:43

I think one or two are real photos the ones where you can't actually see anything untoward

EauRouge Fri 24-Aug-12 17:31:34

Yes, the ones that don't have him in are 100% real shock

Has anyone tried playing the game? I just downloaded it but got frustrated after about 10 seconds. The controls are so annoying. Never even got to see Slender.

sad

What's up Lord my love??

SausageSmuggler Tue 28-Aug-12 10:00:16

I have a legend! Not scary though.

A group of medical students are gathered round their mentor who is telling them the best way of testing for diabetes. He holds up a beaker of urine, dips his finger in and puts it in his mouth; he then explains that if a patient has diabetes then the urine would taste sweet. He instructs the students to do the same which they do rather reluctantly.

When the last student has finished being sick the Dr says 'One of the most important things about being a dr is observation. Not one of you noticed that I put a different finger in my mouth to the one I dipped in the beaker.'

Re the Smith sisters - who had email in 1993? I know it existed but, who the hell had it as a teenager in 1993?

I need more stories!

perceptionreality Fri 09-Nov-12 17:56:08

I've heard quite a few of these stories, especially the hanging dog one at the beginning of the thread.

Also heard one about wishing on a monkey's paw that turned out to be cursed.

Another one about a girl who had only a ribbon which prevented her head from falling off hmm

Stick men, if they exist must be aliens mustn't they?? Anyone know if the first picture on the thread is 'real' with children and the slender man in the background?

I've read some really scary stories on a paranormal website - the one that stuck in my mind was this one:

'Ghoul on the Swing
by Amber

It was summertime in 1992 and I was about 15 or 16. Having received my learner's permit for driving, my mother had taken me out to County Line Road to practice. This is a long, straight country road that divides two counties in Northwest Indiana. We had driven this road many times before, as it was a family tradition for a Sunday drive.

On this day, I was at the driver's seat. I was driving along and we were immersed in conversation when I felt a chill. The hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood straight up and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. My mother had stopped talking and I could tell that she was feeling this as well. I continued to drive, and slowly (as if forced to), I turned my head to the right, my mother did as well. As we looked out the window, and a small, yellow house came into view. I felt fear like I've never known before.

As we continued, I noticed a tree next to the house with a swing. And sitting on that swing was a man. I call him a man because that is the only way I can describe it. He wore all black, including a black derby hat. I remember that I started shaking when I saw his face. He was looking at us and following the movement of the car. His face was red and disfigured. He was smiling at us as he swung. I swear we locked eyes. My mother and I never took our eyes off of him. It felt like it took a century to drive by this house. Then I started crying. My mother started crying. We both looked at each other and said, "What was that?" It felt like Holy Fear.

Having reached the end of the road, we were forced to turn around and go past this house again. Although this time we knew it was there, we were still not prepared to be totally paralyzed with fear and forcibly drawn to it again. But we were and the tears began to flow again. This time I felt my mom snap out of it and heard her utter a silent prayer. We drove away from that place shaken. We still discuss that day, and even talking about it or thinking about it continues to give us physical reactions.

As an adult, I drive by that area quite often now, but I cannot seem to locate where that house was.'
