Novels about the Balkan conflict?

(7 Posts)

I have just read the Tiger's Wife and find myself wanting to know much more about the conflict in the former Yugosalvia. I am a bit embarrassed that I lived through it and have very little idea as to what happened. I have looked for non-fiction but it is all a little detailed/polemical for my liking so I was wondering if anyone had come across a novel that would give me a greater insight?
Thanks in advance.

Definitely read The Cellist of Sarajevo .. very well-written and depicts the reality of a town under siege conditions, people trying to live a normal life but having to dodge snipers while fetching food for their families etc.

Based on a true story I believe.

Zlata's Diary - Zlata Filipovic (sp?)
The Quick and the Dead - Under Siege in Sarajevo by Janine Di Giovanni

Thank you both

The cellist of Sarajevo is excellent. I recommend it too.

Two recommendations means an Amazon order grin

Another recomendation for the Cellist of Sarajevo here and you could also try The People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks which partially covers Bosnia.
