Another crime novel with Dexter character - can you help me identify it?

I've just been talking about Dexter the TV show and series of books, and I always thought that I'd read the first book but it turns out I haven't but I'm pretty sure that I've read a book where 'Dexter' turns out to be the murderer. Can you help me identify it?

I'm sure he's a cop and his name is Dexter - but no Dexter isn't in the title.
